Lyon Shipyard Environmental Specialist in Norfolk, Virginia
Job purpose
This position manages the training and enforcement of environmental initiatives for the entire shipyard.
Duties and responsibilities

1) Plan and conduct sampling procedures in accordance with EPA methods for VPDES permits, of 12 outfalls.
2) Develops, implements, and evaluates Best Management Practices (BMPs) for the purpose of pollution reduction and prevention.
3) Develops and presents training materials concerning environmental awareness in the maritime industry to management personnel and key company employees.
4) Compares statistics on industry and regulatory studies for inconsistencies on adoption of regulatory requirements that are unbeneficial
5) Analyzes data collected from samples to determine probable effects of work settings and activities that contribute to undesired results consisting of but not limited to storm water pollution, process water pollution, and environmentally hazardous workplace conditions and exposures.
6) Presents data in designated statistical format to illustrate common patterns among outfalls and effectiveness of BMPs.
7) Develops, implements, and coordinates compliance programs and procedures related to hazardous materials/hazardous waste, waste minimization/source reduction, air pollution control and water discharges.
8) Conducts research studies to develop theories or methods of abating or controlling sources of environmental pollutants, utilizing knowledge of principles and concepts of various scientific and engineering disciplines: Determines data collection methods to be employed in research projects and surveys.
9) Plans and develops research models, using knowledge of mathematical, statistical, and physical science concepts and approaches.
10) Identifies and analyzes sources of pollution to determine their effects. Accurately submits reports according to deadlines and permit requirements.
11)Act as a liaison between the shipyards safety department and other departments and subcontractors.
12)Conducts safety orientation briefs.
13)Enforce OSHA rules and regulations and company policies to maintain a safety culture and a safe working environment.
14)Work diligently to keep our safety programs current and improve our processes to prevent hazards and injuries.
15)Ensure vessels inspections are conducted and shop inspections are done to identify hazards and correct discrepancies found.
16)Inspections of various shipyard jobs and shops training and correcting safety hazards/ violations.
17) Safety hazards such as poor housekeeping, lack of personal protective equipment, etc.

Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment as well as on the shipyard itself.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The noise level in the shipyard work environment can be loud.This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. Routinely, there will be a need for the incumbent to work/walk Lyon shipyard and all areas therein.

While performing the duties of his job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The position may require frequent lifting, pushing and pulling objects that are 85 pounds or heavier.
Position Type/ Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday. This position periodically requires long hours and weekend work. Regular and predictable on-site attendance is an essential function and a prerequisite to perform other essential functions of the position.
