The Accountant II manages expenses, projects, and accounts. Analyzes and maintains financial statements and schedules. Prepares monthly financial statements. Revises the business plan. Contributes to special projects. Assists with budget preparation and records and updates standard operating procedures.

Essential Functions

  • Monitors various expenses, projects and accounts by monitoring all expenses incurred for a particular event, reviewing vendor statements to ensure that all invoices are posted to the system and paid, researching any vendor related issues, sending invoices to promoters for payments, reconciling contracts, reviewing invoices for completeness, preparing and distributing monthly and quarterly reports to indicate project status, ensuring that proper accounting standards are used, maintaining records for the department, developing spreadsheets and recording expenditures for reports, assisting engineers and project managers, researching accounts and explaining financial regulations.

  • Analyzes and maintains financial statements and schedules by reviewing the general ledger and making adjustments to the entries as needed.

  • Prepares monthly financial statements by reviewing and approving invoices and preparing various reports and analyses as needed.

  • Contributes to special projects by collecting data and combining and summarizing data into relevant information.

  • Assists with annual budget preparation by providing technical support for the budget system and analyzing and examining divisional budgets for clarity.

  • Records and updates standard operating procedures by documenting accounting procedures.

Education/Experience

Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent.

Required:

  • One year experience.

Preferred:

  • Two (2) years of experience in accounting or finance, preferably for a municipality or in government service.

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration

Additional Information & Requirements

Work Schedule: 8:30 am – 5:00PM (Monday – Friday) 40 hrs./wk.

Signing Bonus: This position is eligible for a $5,000 signing bonus.

  • Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.

  • Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.

  • Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.

  • Retirement

    If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

    If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

  • The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
