This position supports the Seven Venues accounting department by processing payments for clients and vendors to satisfy event deadlines, performing various account reconciliations and maintaining accounts payable and receivable. The Accountant I performs administrative duties, assists with budget preparation and monitoring budgetary accounts, and assists customers. As a part of the accounting team, this role will be responsible for processing transactions and preparing checks for distribution while assisting in inventory and maintaining the purchase and pay documents in the City's financial system.

Department Salary Hiring Range: $46,589 - $53,577

Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Performs financial duties by processing transactions and preparing checks for distribution, processing sales and transfers, receiving, compiling and depositing monies into accounts, setting up vendor accounts, setting up events, verifying payments, processing vouchers, requisitions and other documents for payment, preparing reports, entering data into the financial system, reconciling accounts, processing journal vouchers and invoices, maintaining files, reviewing invoices for payment and consulting with vendors regarding accounts.

  • Performs administrative duties by answering and directing telephone inquiries, typing, compiling data for reports, filing documents, processing various reports, maintaining files, compiling information, and keeping logs, writing correspondence, and providing information.

  • Assists with budget preparation and monitoring budgetary accounts by reviewing financial files, inputting the budget into the budget request system, gathering, and analyzing data and preparing statistical and financial reports.

  • Assists customers by processing payments, conducting research, responding to telephone requests to establish or terminate accounts, arranging payment extensions for delinquent accounts, providing information, and resolving any related issues.

Education/Experience

Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent.

Minimum of 1-3 years of experience bookkeeping and or accounting experience.

Additional Information & Requirements

Work Location: 201 E. Brambleton Ave., Norfolk, VA 23510

Work Hours: M-F, Holidays, Nights and Weekends 40 hours

Signing Bonus: This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus for applications received on or after February 22, 2022. The signing bonus will be paid in two (2) increments: $2,500 upon completion of 60 days of employment, and $2,500 upon completion of your probationary period. To receive the signing bonus, you must be an active employee in good standing.

  • Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.

  • Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.

  • Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.

  • Retirement

    If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

    If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

  • The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
