Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of Advising, the Academic Advisor will advise Health Sciences majors. The Academic Advisor is responsible for advising first year, second year and transfer students. This position will co-conduct new student orientations; monitor and track students’ academic performance; support student success, retention and progress to graduation; and provide individualized outreach to students in academic difficulty. The advisor must understand and effectively communicate Health Sciences major curricula, major and program admissions requirements, and University policies and their nuances. The advisor will teach or co-teach HLTH 101: Intro the Health Professions.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in higher education, counseling, or related field.

  • Working knowledge of university policies and campus resources.

  • Working knowledge of academic success strategies.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills including public speaking.

  • Strong written communication skills and skills utilizing technology.

  • Effective time -management, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse population of students, faculty and administrators; the ability to work independently and cooperatively with faculty and other offices on campus; a demonstrated ability to further the educational development of students.

  • Prior advising experience is required, preferably in a college or university setting

  • Experience using technology, preferably in advising.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Some experience with academic programming and/or teaching preferred.

  • Some knowledge of admissions requirements for competitive majors.

  • Some experience in academic advising for the allied health professions
