We are building Microsoft’s cloud storage solution - Microsoft Azure Storage, which is a massively scalable, highly distributed, ubiquitously accessible storage system, designed to scale out and serve the entire world. We continue to have tremendous hockey stick growth, we have many Exabyte’s of data stored, and are designing and building systems for Zettabyte scale to support demand growth for the coming years.

As a Performance Engineer in the Azure Storage team, you will use your experience and skills to identify ways to improve performance and help set the direction and priorities of other engineering teams. You will tackle some of the most challenging performance problems and get involved in performance optimization. You will face challenges of monitoring, analyzing, and designing for ever-growing data needs of our customers and for ensuring data privacy, protection and compliance. Responsibilities

  • Guides team and acts as an expert for Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) and monitors other engineers across product lines, working on call to monitor system/product/service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions.

  • Leads product development and scaling to customer requirements and applies best practices for meeting scaling needs and performance expectations and holds accountability for products that do not meet expectations.

  • Diagnose any performance bottleneck. When diagnosing a performance issue, be able to start with application logs, and dive deeper into the source code, profiling information, and OS and system metrics to RCA performance issues.

  • Run experiments and benchmarks to understand the performance of a complex distributed system and isolate performance issues.

  • Be highly organized and able to clearly present results and recommendations to development teams.

  • Remains current in skills by investing time and effort into staying abreast of current developments that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of products while also driving consistency in monitoring and operations at scale.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 3+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 2+ years of experience in software engineering practices, coding with strong testing, debugging and analytical skills.

  • 2+ years of experience as a performance engineer or as a software developer working on performance-oriented projects.

  • 2+ years of experience planning, scheduling and delivering quality software.

Other Qualifications:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: 

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 3+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • Experience in building quality products and services preferably in distributed systems.
