The Role

This requisition is for a Manager Engineer 2 position in the A4W Reactor Plant Planning Yard’s (RPPY) Shock, Stress, and Containment section. The candidate will lead a group of engineers in performing analysis (shock and structural) and qualification (shock and environmental vibration) for various RPPY components (mechanical and electrical). Furthermore components under the cognizance of the CVN68 Class Propulsion Plant Engineering Activity (PPEA), Standard Navy Valve yard (SNVY) and the A1B Propulsion Plant Planning Yard (PPPY) will encompass the overall responsibility of the section. The candidate should have broad based expertise in shock, vibration, structural design/analysis, reactor compartment containment design and extensive knowledge of, and experience with, the naval shock and vibration qualification process and requirements. The candidate should have technical knowledge of ship design, welding, materials, and structures for Navy platforms. The candidate should be able to apply engineering principles, theory, technology, and tools to lead a team which will analyze and resolve complex engineering problems in new and existing designs. An innovative, cost effective technical solutions mindset is expected as well as making decisions or providing recommendations that are critical to achieving project/program objectives. The candidate must be experienced in project management, and demonstrated the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and prioritize work to meet schedule, cost, and quality objectives. A successful candidate should have experience with developing manning and budgetary estimates and is expected to ensure that projects are completed on schedule and within budget.

The position holder will support development of technical solutions for meeting the defined objectives and deliverables associated with technical design requirements, and shock and vibration design and qualification requirements for RPPY, PPEA, SNVY and PPPY programs. The individual will provide leadership and direction for specific engineering projects, and should have demonstrated team leadership experience and the ability to establish and execute effective work processes and procedures. The candidate will oversee all actions taken by specific persons within E83 possessing Delegated Approval Authority (DAA) for Shock and vibration and assure all DAA activity reporting requirements are met. The candidate should have excellent verbal and technical writing skills to support the development of reports and presentations detailing the results of analyses and/or studies performed. The individual will also maintain an awareness of the latest developments in the field and expand their capabilities as necessary. External contacts will include NAVSEA, NNL, SUPSHIP, Ship’s Force, Naval shipyard personnel, manufacturers, and other industry technical specialists.

The candidate should have a strong technical expertise in Navy ship design requirements, structural analysis and design, and shock and vibration qualification by testing and analysis of components.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 6 years of progressive technical experience in research, engineering and design; Master's Degree and 4 years of relevant experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
