We are seeking to strengthen our UK Maritime team by recruiting a Technical Director for Maritime Engineering to lead on technical project delivery, technical excellence and work-winning with a focus on the UK and International Maritime markets.

The team is busy working on a variety of projects to a diverse client base, both nationally and internationally, including UK and International Ports, Contractors, Lenders and Terminal Operators. Our portfolio is increasing, and we are looking to further strengthen our technical offer by recruiting a Technical Director to provide technical and project leadership across our UK Maritime Engineering team.

You will be expected to take a leading role across our Maritime portfolio for all aspects of project delivery, project performance, client relationships and people development, with a particular emphasis on overseeing the technical quality of projects, driving continuous improvement initiatives and passing technical knowledge on to colleagues.

You will work in a highly inclusive and dynamic environment where collaboration, enthusiasm, and empathy are highly valued. Your role will be office based in Newcastle; you will have an opportunity to visit sites in the UK and internationally.

Responsibilities:

  • Safety, health and well-being leadership - setting the culture for our project teams;

  • Setting the direction for technical delivery of planning, design, supervision and due diligence of ports and maritime schemes across the Maritime Engineering portfolio;

  • Technical leadership, identifying and establishing skill gaps, training requirements and future technical trends at all levels;

  • Client-facing and escalation point for Maritime projects;

  • Stakeholder engagement (e.g. technical approval authorities);

  • Mobilisation of new project teams, including skills development and integration;

  • Project programme and resourcing overview, including forward work-planning;

  • Commercial performance of projects;

  • Delivery, quality and technical consistency across all teams;

  • Project governance and compliance, including technical assurance.

Skills/ Behaviours:

  • Chartered Civil Engineer (MICE or similar);

  • Significant experience in a construction and ports and maritime environment.

  • A track record of demonstrating strong leadership including, motivating, influencing, inspiring and managing conflict at a team level and to broader business peers.

  • Can demonstrate experience of common forms of contract, including NEC and FIDIC.

  • Ability to develop strong relationships with clients;

  • Good knowledge of Maritime standards in the UK and overseas;

  • Detailed understanding of technical requirements for ports and maritime projects from rehabilitation and expansion projects to greenfield developments;

  • Ability to build relationships and work with resources and teams within the wider WSP business (regionally and internationally);

  • Ability to pass on knowledge and mentor junior members of staff;

  • Strong commercial awareness and ability to influence financial performance on projects;

  • Able to plan strategically and set the medium-term (2-5 year) direction for technical delivery.
