WSP has a large, highly experienced and welcoming team who are engaged on a diverse range of private and public sector multi-disciplinary and standalone ecology projects within the UK. The Ecology team pride themselves on the integrated support offered by working alongside our in-house water, landscape, arboriculture, Natural Capital and sustainability specialists to deliver commercially balanced, innovative and integrated solutions.

With one of the UK’s largest ecology teams and a growing portfolio of projects, WSP is looking to appoint a Consultant grade ornithologist to help support our work. We are seeking an enthusiastic ornithologist with demonstrable experience in undertaking breeding and wintering bird surveys across a variety of habitats and who can also carry out the associated data analysis and reporting thereafter.

You will work closely with other team members to help deliver surveys to a high standard for clients. You will undertake a broad range of ornithological survey work and reporting. The role will include:

  • undertaking bird surveys across a variety of habitats and locations, potentially nationwide;

  • the digitization and management of datasets using GIS;

  • assisting with data analysis and the production of baseline reports and assessments.

There will also be the opportunity to assist with managing the delivery of survey programmes and to support the wider ecology team with protected species surveys.

You will be paired with a mentor within the ornithology team who will provide advice and support and there will be unique opportunities to develop and progress your career.

  • Excellent bird identification skills and a sound knowledge base of avian ecology and related legislation;

  • Experience of species specific and generic bird survey methodologies, ideally within the consultancy sector;

  • Reliability, flexibility, and a willingness to work unsociable hours and at remote site locations across the UK as required;

  • Good data analysis/interpretation skills and ideally experienced in GIS;

  • Good communication and organisational skills;

  • A degree (or equivalent) in ecology or a related subject; and

  • A valid UK driving licence is essential.
