Position Summary:
Under the leadership of the Custodian Foreperson or other supervisor designated by the Director of Building Services , is responsible for the general cleaning, maintenance and inspection of all spaces including but not limited to offices, labs, hallways, auditoriums, restrooms, building interiors, exterior entrances or overhangs and steps, gymnasium, cafeteria, classrooms and furniture. Assists in loading and unloading of furniture, equipment and supply deliveries to and from the campus and between campus buildings. Assists in setting up all special events. Maintains a safe, clean and orderly work area and performs all work in a safe manner.
Essential Functions:
Maintenance/Cleaning: Responsible for thoroughly cleaning all University facilities; including but not limited to: Washing, scrubbing, shampooing, sweeping, dusting and polishing of floors, ceilings, walls, carpeting, tile, light fixtures, woodwork, furniture and office equipment, entrance exteriors, overhangs, steps, building interiors, cafeteria, living quarters, hallways, gymnasiums, auditoriums, labs, classrooms, restrooms and all other building areas. Collecting and removing all trash and recyclables and disposing of at proper disposal site. Replenishing supplies in the restrooms (ex. paper towels, toilet paper, soap, etc.). Emptying all waste receptacles and ashtrays. Mopping up any wet areas that may occur (ex. bad weather, liquid spill, etc.). Assisting, when necessary, in shoveling snow and removing ice from the building exterior or other areas. Operating mechanical cleaning equipment. Following oral and written work instructions. Utilizing a fountain brush with telescoping extension pole handle or tucker brush when required. Operating different types of movable support mechanisms, ranging from conventional ladders to rolling scaffolds and hydraulic or electric lifts, when required. Turning out all lights and closing and locking all windows if the areas that they are assigned are unoccupied after the completion of their work. Replacement of any burned out light bulbs and fuses within fixtures with the use of a screwdriver or other appropriate tools to access bulbs and fuses when needed. Inspect work areas to ensure safe and clean and to maintain quality control.
Deliveries: Responsible for the unloading and loading of shipments (ex. Furniture, printed material, equipment, etc.) and delivery of those shipments to the proper area. Additionally, responsible for pick up and deliveries of items including but not limited to furniture, supplies, and mail. Includes, but not limited to physical tasks such as lifting, carrying and walking. Will safeguard the confidentiality of university personnel records, files, fiscal data, correspondence and similar confidential materials.
Additional Functions:
Will adhere to the university’s safety policies and procedures and maintain the campus and their work areas in a safe, clean, well-groomed and maintained condition.
Will have general knowledge of safety precautions and of potential hazardous conditions.
Will report any unsafe conditions or any damage to equipment or buildings, to their supervisor or manager.
Set-up for all special events, open house, graduation, etc.
Performs other related duties as required and when instructed.
Prerequisite Qualifications:
Minimum of Four (4) years of experience in cleaning methods, materials and equipment or other related experience.
Must be able to work well with others.
Must possess the ability to understand and communicate oral and written instructions.
Ability to work weekends, holidays, rotating shifts and overtime. Ability to respond as an “Essential Employee” of the State.
At the university’s discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be excepted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
