The Hertz Corporation Driver in Newark, New Jersey

The driver candidate will be driving rental cars between our area locations in the New Jersey and New York area. The position is based out of Port Newark, NJ.

Wage: 15.38/hr

This is a casual job, with terrific flexibility. There are 4-6 Work Assignment times each day: morning, afternoon, evening and night, and work is distributed based on availability. Individuals work with a "crew" of up to 12 other drivers to move cars from one Hertz facility to another. When not driving a vehicle, the crews ride together in a passenger van to the next vehicle pick up facility. Our crews move cars to rental locations, vehicles in need of maintenance to appropriate facilities, cars that have reached the end of their rental fleet life to auctions, etc. One must be physically present to participate in the work assignment process. We do not have a phone number to call in to check on work availability - our needs can change in moments and we wouldn't want to disappoint or mislead any of our drivers, or short-staff ourselves!

Candidates MUST be comfortable driving in Metropolitan area. Work assignment is not guaranteed, although we are busy and have need of more drivers. If work is not available for all who are seeking work assignment at the shape, it will be announced within approximately 20 minutes of the start time, at the work assignment process. Drivers should be available to work 5 hours or more each time they shape. We try to work as many people as possible at each Work Assignment time, with the goal of everyone getting at least 5 hours of work. Business needs dictate our staffing needs, however. Drivers may work up to 20 hours per week.

Wages are based on "Trip Rates". These are determined by the mileage from one facility to another and published annually. In cases of excessive traffic or bad weather that cause time delays, wages are compared daily to determine whether "trip rate" or hourly minimum wage is greater, and the higher amount will be awarded for the day.

Must have 9 years of driving experience and have a valid driver's license with a good driving record.

Please be aware that once your application has been reviewed, you may receive a request for Driver's License and or Background information from our background check vendor. You have 48 hours to respond to the request, after which the link is no longer valid. Please check your email frequently after applying, as well as your SPAM folder (just in case!).

Disqualification from consideration will result if a review of your abstract includes any of the following:

  • Driver’s license currently suspended, revoked, invalid, surrendered or expired

  • Conviction for Reckless Disregard for Life and Property

  • Conviction for DWI/DUI/DWAI or other alcohol or controlled substance related convictions within the past 36 months

  • Three or more convictions for moving violations within the past 24 months (Convictions include seatbelt, cell phone violations, speeding, and other safety related and/or repetitive violations as determined by the company)

  • Failure to report an accident to the police or leaving the scene of an accident within the past 36 months

  • Possession of stolen vehicle or use of a vehicle in a crime within the past 48 months
