POSITION DETAILS

In January 2023, NYC Mayor Eric Adams announced in his “State of the City” address a new commitment to expand the City’s ability to prepare New Yorkers for tech careers by supporting the expansion of a world-class public higher education pipeline. As a core component of the City’s tech workforce development strategy, the “CUNY 2x Tech” initiative will be expanding to Guttman Community College to equip tech graduates with the skills and experience they need to succeed in tech careers in NYC. To achieve this goal, the “CUNY 2x Tech” initiative provides a comprehensive investment in instruction, advising, and experience that are essential to prepare New Yorkers for 21st century jobs, and was developed in direct response to the needs identified by NYC academic leaders and industry professionals.

At Guttman Community College, CUNY, the Office of Advising & Transfer Support is a dynamic, innovative, and student-centered team of specialists who support students' academic, professional, and personal success and persistence from recruitment through graduation.

Reporting to the Associate Director of Advising & Transfer Support, the Student Success Advisor for Technology Programs is responsible for supporting the success of all students, with a focus on students enrolled in technology focused degree and/or certificate programs and will align, accomplish, and extend the mission of CUNY 2x Tech. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Conduct group and individual information sessions/workshops for prospective students and supporters, facilitate orientation sessions, and present to key internal and external stakeholders, both independently and collaboratively with other campus units/committees.

  • Assist prospective and persisting students individually and in group sessions with tasks such as understanding the College's educational model, navigating course selection, registration, and continuous enrollment.

  • Manage a caseload of continuing students by monitoring progress toward degree or certificate completion using technology and other means.

  • Collaborate with academic departments, faculty, and internal/external partners to plan academic and advising activities, and monitor student performance.

  • Conduct proactive advising for all students on course enrollment, early career choices, academic standing, and policies and procedures.

  • Assist in promoting and implementing measures for timely degree attainment, including interventions related to academic standing and success.

  • Provide transfer counseling and facilitate a transfer planning curriculum for all students, including workshops, online and print resources, individual advisement, and events such as transfer fairs and visits.

  • Collaborate with campus units/committees to facilitate career and internship planning for students.

  • Train students in utilizing web-based platforms, including but not limited to Degreeworks and CUNYfirst.

  • Report on activities and outcomes, providing assistance with report writing, assessment, and data collection.

  • Serve on relevant College and University Committees as needed.

  • Ensure that students are on track to participate in relevant CUNY 2x Tech-related programs.

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

  • Some evening and weekend hours are mandatory

QUALIFICATIONS

A Master's degree in an appropriate discipline (e.g., counseling, guidance, social work, or psychology) and two years' related experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • An understanding of the tech industry and its relationship to higher education.

  • Experience with data and reporting (both quantitative and qualitative written reports).

  • Ability to work nights and weekends.

  • Experience working with career-focused adult learners.

  • Familiarity with academic advisement, particularly in STEM fields.

  • Previous professional experience in a tech field, preferably within or adjacent to NYC tech companies.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and experience or ability to quickly learn appropriate modules in the CUNYfirst system.

CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

Provides educational programs, academic advice, and counseling assistance to students in one of CUNY's comprehensive support programs.

  • Provides advice and counsel to students covering academic, social, career, and related issues, making appropriate referrals as needed

  • Determines areas of need and develops and teaches orientation programs, seminars, student workshops, and other activities

  • Develops interventions related to student academic status and success

  • Reports on activities and outcomes, assisting with report-writing and data collection

  • Collaborates with academic and student support departments to ensure students are utilizing available services and programming

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

$70,238 - $75,465; Salary commensurate with education and experience.
