Position Summary


Break Through Tech is seeking a Program Director to lead the successful nation-wide delivery of our Sprinternships program. In this role, you will serve as the operational leader for the Sprinternships program, working through your direct team as well as internal and external partners to ensure an excellent day-to-day program experience for all participants. You will also own the long-term strategic planning for program expansion and operational evolution. Responsibilities will include program leadership and operations, oversight of program management, team leadership and strategic partner management.

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible 3-year term position with the possibility of renewal. This is a hybrid position with the expectation to work at least 1 day per week (Wednesday) on the Cornell Tech campus in New York City. Flexible work schedules are subject to change.

Essential Functions Include


Program Operations- 30%

  • Drive the strategy, coordination, and day-to-day oversight of Break Through Tech Sprinternships program operations across all delivery sites nationwide
  • Define and manage towards a set of program delivery standards, processes, playbooks and supports to ensure all delivery teams are set up for success
    • Build a culture across delivery teams of delivering with fidelity while innovating where appropriate to discover new best practices and solutions
    • Lift up and systematize innovations for delivery generated by sites and program teams when possible
    • Intervene to coach and correct issues with delivery across sites and program teams as needed
  • Develop and leverage measures (health metrics, KPIs, etc) to track and assess operational quality and efficiency across program delivery teams
    • In partnership with Organizational Excellence, build and maintain data collection, analysis and reporting processes to ensure we can track and act on real-time delivery data on a day-to-day basis
  • Define program delivery budgets; build and win approval for business cases and make mission critical decisions about where to invest
    • Track spend and per participant cost to ensure operational efficiency as we scale; identify opportunities for cost savings through automation, tooling and other operational innovations

Program Management Oversight- 30%

  • Ensure the successful delivery of the Sprinternships program across all program teams and sites:
    • Develop and oversee plans and expected milestones to help ensure all participants a) benefit from the core components of the program design and b) are on track to achieve program outcomes
    • Manage programs both in person and online; resolve highly complex concerns and problems; assure resolution of participant concerns by nurturing relationships and collaboration with other areas.
  • Serve as the internal and external expert on the Sprinternships program from an operational perspective; cultivate a deep understanding of the levers for success within the program design and how to mobilize program teams to make great tactical decisions
  • Partner with Product Design and Senior Leadership to develop and leverage program evaluation tools to measure the impact of programs, ensuring we are always driving towards our North Star of increasing access to internships and technical roles for our participants
  • Lead data collection and reporting across program teams

Program Leadership- 10%

  • Develop and deliver a strategy for scaling program operations to support growth; work with Senior Leadership to set and deliver on targets for program reach
  • Partner with other senior staff members across the organization to contribute to the long-term strategy for and design of our programs
  • Promote the program externally as public spokesperson, including representing the program, strategy, and opportunities for engagement with corporate partners, prospective host university partners, and funders.

Team Leadership- 15%

  • Hire, train, and directly manage a high-performing team of Program Managers and Specialists to deliver the program
    • Set goals and key performance indicators for the team members; conduct performance management, performance dialogues, ongoing coaching and counseling, and growth and professional development opportunities.
    • Identify headcount needs and develop business cases for team growth as needed to support scale
    • Own organizational design for Program Delivery teams
  • Indirectly manage the work of other Break Through Tech staff members on other teams (i.e. Admissions, Student Success, Career Services) who will contribute to the delivery of the program
  • Cultivate and maintain collaborative relationships with other departments within Break Through Tech and Cornell Tech to support the work.
    • Work alongside the Business development and Industry Partner team to cultivate deep rooted knowledge and understanding of partner needs and opportunities; contribute to external marketing to employers and potential partners
    • Oversee internal and external planning needs and accountability requirements; oversee the development and implementation of solutions.

Partner Management- 10%

  • Cultivate and oversee the strategic relationships with delivery partners including partner universities and companies
    • Define the need for delivery partners (outreach partners, university partners, etc) to support program expansion plans and build frameworks for how delivery partners will function within the broader landscape of our work as needed
    • Identify, source and onboard new delivery partners as needed to support program expansion plans; offboard delivery partners as needed when business needs change.
    • Define program delivery standards, playbooks and supports to ensure delivery partners are equipped for success
    • Indirectly manage the work of external Site Directors to ensure program delivery meets or exceeds standards, in compliance with grant terms
    • Manage complex and high risk relationships with other executive-level stakeholders within corporations, organizations and universities as needed
  • With the Industry Partnerships team, develop and manage senior level relationships with current and prospective local employer/career partners
  • Participate in Business Development calls with potential new parters and help with existing partner renewal
  • Build and manage cross-functional relationships within Break Through Tech and across the university ecosystem at Cornell Tech

Other position-related responsibilities - 5%

  • Participate in projects with occasional work responsibility falling above or below current classification.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, volunteers and community members.
  • Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and wellbeing.
  • Master's degree with 5-7 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience to lead operations for large-scale, multi-site educational programs at scale, preferably in the early career, internship or higher educational space
  • Demonstrated experience successfully delivering work-based learning programs in-person and online at scale
  • Demonstrated ability to lead direct teams as well as cross-functional contributors and indirect/matrixed teams
  • Demonstrated ability to build and roll out systems and processes users not only readily adopt but love.
  • Familiarity with best practices for delivering work-based learning programs and/or Higher Education-to-Industry transition programs, preferably for technical roles
  • Data-driven decision maker with experience leveraging tools including Microsoft Excel / Google Sheets, Microsoft PowerPoint / Google Slides to evaluate and report on impact and effectiveness
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, particularly when working with high level internal and external stakeholders
  • Prior experience contributing to program marketing and/or partnership development with high level, executive audiences
  • Detail-oriented and organized systems thinker
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-moving, quickly changing work environment
  • Culture builder with expertise in successful change management and organizational effectiveness

Preferred Qualifications

  • Subject-matter expertise in the delivery of work-based learning programs for technical audiences
  • Deep understanding of the entry-level talent market for highly technical roles (such as software developers, data scientists, etc)
  • Thought leader in the work-based learning space or program operations space
