Job Description:

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Classroom Magazine Group is seeking a motivated and highly-competent senior editor to join our dynamic team. The person who fills this position will work on on all aspects of Storyworks Grade 2, which is a multi-genre classroom magazine for second-graders. The senior editor will pitch article ideas, write articles, write skills pages for young children, and perform any administrative tasks that need to be done.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Write fascinating nonfiction articles at a second-grade level.

  • Brainstorm and pitch second-grade appropriate article ideas.

  • Communicate with scientists and historians to make sure the facts we present in our magazines are accurate; perform rigorous research on nonfiction topics that will appear in the magazine .

  • Write lesson plans for our articles and stories.

  • Supervise freelancers who write vocabulary and standards alignments.

  • Communicate with teachers and manage Teacher advisory board, including recruiting new advisers, setting up subscriptions for advisers, and creating and sending monthly issue evaluations through Google.

  • Performs various administrative tasks.

Qualifications

HOW YOU CAN FIT (Qualifications)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Lucid and clear writer

  • Ability to write for young children

  • Ability to communicate clearly both with other staff and with people outside Scholastic (i.e. teachers, experts)

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and stay organized

  • 5+ years’ experience in a writing, editing position

  • All applicants must submit a cover letter and writing sample of previous work
