Bloomberg Regional Banking Reporter in New York, New York

Bloomberg News is seeking an experienced and collaborative reporter to cover the US regional banking sector from New York. Last year's bank failures showed the stark pressures facing the industry and recent months have demonstrated the dramatic steps that some firms have taken either to survive or to seize on the turmoil.

Regional banks are in many ways the heart of American finance; the go-to place for regular people to take out a mortgage, open a checking account or get a small business loan. They're also at the center of some of the biggest themes on Wall Street, including the commercial real estate bust, the ripple effects of higher interest rates, and the competitive pressure from money-center banks and asset managers.

We're looking for a well-sourced reporter who can break news and has the in-depth knowledge to explain firms' strategies and their implications. The ideal candidate can pivot from on-the-day news to bigger pieces and has the ability to juggle multiple stories and responsibilities at the same time.

We want a self-starter who understands our readers and can break news on everything from CEO changes to new strategies to asset sales. You should have a track record of developing sources, breaking high-impact news and writing longer-form enterprise pieces. Experience covering banks is a plus, as would experience doing TV hits or video clips for social media to ensure your reporting gets multiplied across our many formats.

We'll trust you to:

  • Constantly develop sourcing at the highest levels in order to break the biggest news in the industry;

  • Produce quick-fire stories as well as long-term enterprise that inform our readers;

  • Collaborate both within the banking team and across the newsroom;

  • Explore original ways to tell our biggest stories;

  • Take the initiative and drive our coverage of the banking industry.

You'll need to have:

  • Minimum of three years reporting and experience of finance and breaking news;

  • A proven ability to build deep sourcing;

  • Sound news judgement and a talent for looking beyond the obvious story.

Apply if you think we're a good match. We'll get in touch to let you know what the next steps are.
