Jigsaw is launching a new initiative which looks to build technologies that bring coherence to conversations at scale. Together with collaborators across Google and civil society, and informed by the opportunities and challenges presented by genAI, we’re exploring new possibilities for online conversations and online deliberations.

In 2024, Jigsaw aims to host a scaled, online, deliberative discussion to demonstrate the potential for the latest in deliberation technology and AI to combine to transform deliberative discussions. This will be a collaborative effort with partners like Google DeepMind, deliberation tech partners, and news publishers.

To attract and incentivize people to participate, we will need to run tailored user acquisition campaigns that benefit from organizational collaborations (e.g., with media, universities) and direct user acquisition efforts online.

Jigsaw (http://jigsaw.google.com/) is a unit within Google that explores threats to open societies and builds technology that inspires scalable solutions. Our team addresses a range of global security challenges including defending against digital attacks, mitigating the rise of online hate and harassment, countering extremism, and fighting censorship. Jigsaw offers mission-driven work within a nimble interdisciplinary team, connections to academia and civil society, and a quick path to taking technology public.

Because we believe the genAI era creates both an opportunity and an imperative to rethink our digital public square, we’re increasingly invested in technology to support democratic discourse.
