The New School Part-Time Faculty: Code as a Liberal Art in New York, New York

Responsibilities:

Eugene Lang College, the undergraduate liberal arts division of The New School, invites applications from qualified scholars and practitioners for part-time faculty positions teaching hybrid theory/practice courses in Code as a Liberal Art, a critical computer science program that offers hands-on coding instruction within an arts, humanities, and social sciences curriculum.

Recent and future course topics include:

• Creative software practice such as live coding;

• Distant reading, natural language processing, and other techniques in the digital humanities;

• Critical interventions in the development & deployment of large language models & other AI technologies;

• Techniques for identifying and redressing racial, ethnic, and gender bias in software systems;

• Software and disability;

• Low carbon computing and other studies of digital technology & the environment;

• Critical game studies and game development;

• Algorithmic and quantitative research methods;

• The infrastructure, geography, and political economy of digital networks;

• Hacking and “radical software”; and

• The history, theory, and philosophy of computation.

Technical tools and platforms of recent and future coursework include: Python and associated libraries ( NLTK , TextBlob, PIL , Numpy), Javascript (Node, React, D3, Three.js), Processing (including Java, Python, and p5.js versions), Hydra, Sonic Pi, TidalCycles, Unity, Hugging Face, HTML / CSS , Git, and the Unix command line.

Instructors will teach 1 to 2 undergraduate hybrid theory/practice courses per year and advise enrolled students. Most courses will have previously developed syllabi with the option for instructors to tailor the curriculum to their interests and expertise. Opportunities may also arise to work with Program Leadership to plan original courses, contribute to academic event programming, or develop shorter specialized student workshops. Any additional duties would be compensated in accordance with the terms laid out in the union contract and would require approval in advance of any work being done.

Courses are convened in-person and faculty are expected to work on-campus in accordance with University policies.

Part-time faculty are responsible for: developing course content and syllabi in consultation with Program Leadership; attending all classes they are assigned to teach as scheduled by the University; reporting any emergency faculty absences to the Program Leadership and Assistant Dean of Faculty Affairs; recording student attendance in a timely manner within two days of each class session; and adhering to all University policies (i.e., FERPA , exclusive use of New School email, etc.), as outlined in the ACT - UAW Local 7902 Collective Bargaining Agreement.

This is a unionized position and compensation rates are set by the university’s contract with ACT - UAW Local 7902.

23-24 Hourly rate:

Studio courses $112.50/contact hour

Seminar courses: $141/contact hour

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must hold a terminal degree (or commensurate work experience or creative practice) in the arts, humanities, or social sciences ( ABD will be considered) and will have record of an active software development practice using contemporary platforms and tools; OR, candidates may hold a terminal degree (or commensurate work experience or creative practice) in computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field ( ABD will be considered) and have a record of active contribution to the arts, humanities, or social sciences. Candidates should also have an ongoing and demonstrable research record, expertise, project work, or other practice relevant to the course being taught.

Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States, and able to adhere to University COVID -19 Policy and requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

Prior experience teaching within higher education is highly preferred, otherwise any pedagogical activity broadly defined will be advantageous
