Junior / Assistant Scientists (Full-Time)

NYU Dentistry Department of Molecular Pathobiology

Two (2) positions are available for full-time research assistants to join the laboratory of Dr. Kara Margolis, studying the biology of the enteric nervous system (ENS) and the role of the gut in brain-gut axis disorders. The candidates will work closely with lab members in the design and implementation of experiments that use mouse genetic models to investigate the role of ENS development in gastrointestinal function, motility, inflammatory bowel disease and mood and behavioral disorders as well as disorders of gut-brain interactions. The laboratory is housed within the Pain Research Center at New York University, a vibrant, highly collaborative scientific community comprised of a team of eight established Principal Investigators (and actively recruiting) who are experts in diverse fields with a common interest in cell signaling and the study of pain, as well as their post-docs, graduate and college students, and research scientists.

These positions require bright, self-motivated and organized individuals who are quick to learn new techniques, and feel comfortable working independently as well as with others. Some evening and weekend work will be necessary. A minimum of a two-year commitment required.

Primary job responsibilities include performing experiments and maintaining the mouse colony (breeding, genotyping, and administering treatments to genetically-modified mice). Experiments will involve mouse dissection, molecular biology, immunohistochemistry, qPCR, immunoblotting, FACS, confocal microscopy, and behavioral studies. Secondary responsibilities will include ordering supplies, maintenance of stock reagents, and management of lab expenditures. This position will require work with chemicals and laboratory animals.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary ranges for the position at the ranks of Junior Research Scientist, and Assistant Research Scientist are $47,500 - $64,000, and $59,000 - $76,000, respectively. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree and/or coursework in chemistry, biology, neuroscience or related sciences

At least one year of experience of in a laboratory setting Facility with Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint. Exceptional organizational skills. Proficiency with written and spoken English. Candidate must feel comfortable with the handling and dissection of laboratory mice.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with molecular biology techniques (PCR, immunoblotting), cell culture and rodent models.
