Job Description:

The Packaging & Paper/Forest Products team covers approximately 25 stocks, with more being added. Our coverage spans beverage cans, containerboard & corrugated, paperboard & consumer cartons, flexible packaging, pulp and wood/timber products for construction. It is one of the longest-tenured and most highly ranked research teams on Wall Street of all time, frequently speaking at leadership conferences, company board presentations, and the media. Key stocks include Weyerhaeuser, Louisiana-Pacific, Boise Cascade, Ball Corp, Packaging Corp, Crown Holdings, Berry Global, Sealed Air, and Avery Dennison.

Known for its proprietary, 20-plus-year-running survey of independent boxmakers and global containerboard and beverage can supply/demand models (the only ones of their kind on the street) the team is also well-known for our 25-plus-year running Field Trip and Conferences and Sustainability Surveys on packaging.

The candidate will be largely focused on the critical lumber, panels, timber and timberland, pulp, and paper portions of our coverage and offer opportunities for individual coverage over time. The team prides itself on offering client interactions and meetings as soon as its associates have appropriate certifications and industry knowledge. The candidate willbe responsible for all aspects of the job, including idea generation, industry research, client interaction, database creation/management, modeling, writing, valuation analysis, marketing materials, conferences, plant tours, and much more. The role will be naturally expanded through self-starter initiative and the dynamic role itself.

Responsibilities

  • Perform complex financial modeling & valuation work

  • Write regular industry and company reports and company launch initiations from scratch

  • Analyze data in market research databases and conduct surveys in the paperboard/forest sector

  • Demonstrate strong industry knowledge and business judgment

  • Interview industry experts regarding our covered companies and industries

  • Work with Senior Analysts to develop key industry themes

  • Build relationships and facilitate information flow with contacts at covered companies

  • Participate and contribute to client meetings and events

  • Attend meetings and interact with key opinion leaders

  • Closely follow and understand market, industry and company specific activity, and relay to analyst when traveling

  • Seek out new, unusual sources of information to augment our research capabilities

  • Respond to research inquiries from our institutional investor clients during market hours

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent years of experience; MBA and/or progress towards a CFA or other relevant professional certifications is a plus

  • Minimum 1-5 years experience in accounting, corporate finance, research, banking or consulting

  • Strong modeling and financial analysis skills (income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement in Excel)

  • Ability to comprehend and create charts, diagrams, tables and other data visualizations

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Knowledge of statistics and/or data analytics/data science techniques a plus

  • General interest in the stock market and/or financial markets

  • Must work well in a fast-paced, intense and collaborative team environment

  • Must have excellent communication skills – written and verbal
