City of New York ELEVATOR MECHANIC in New York, New York

Job Description

Under supervision, candidate will inspect, maintain, adjust and repair passenger and freight elevator systems; maintain adequate elevator service to developments; provide safe elevator service to NYCHA residents. Duties shall include, but not be limited to the following:

  1. Lubricate and clean all components of hydraulic and electric elevator systems.

  2. Make adjustments as required to contactors and controllers in the electrical and hydraulic elements of elevator systems.

  3. Inspect and check doors, cable rails, bumpers, safeties, overloads, relays, sheaves and governors to assure continued safe operations.

  4. Re-rope and re-wire elevator systems as required.

  5. Check out troubles in all types of elevator and escalator systems.

  6. Perform necessary adjustments and/or repairs to all elevator mechanical and electrical components and their control systems.

  7. Inspect, maintain, adjust and repair escalators, platform lifts, conveyors and dumbwaiters.

  8. Operate a motor vehicle in the performance of assigned duties.

Note: Eligible candidates may be required to pass a practical exam evaluating their ability to perform typical Elevator Mechanic tasks (i.e. trouble shooting, wiring door operators, print reading, etc.)

Note:

License Requirement: At the time of appointment, candidates must possess the following to be considered for these positions:

  1. A valid New York State Elevator Mechanic License

  2. A valid New York City Elevator Agency Technician License

  3. A valid Department of Labor Technician's License

  4. Department of Buildings Technician's License

  5. Department of Buildings Inspector License (preferred)

These licenses must be maintained for the duration of your employment. You will be responsible for the payment of any fees associated with the maintenance of these licenses.

NOTE: The Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) administered a civil service exam for the Elevator Mechanic title on 1/25/2023. Therefore, applicants (candidates) that did not take and pass the exam will potentially not be considered, likewise applicants not reachable on the established civil service list will potentially be in jeopardy of being replaced with an eligible civil service candidate.

NOTE: IF THIS APPOINTMENT IS MADE ON A PROVISIONAL BASIS PURSUANT TO 65 OF THE NYS CIVIL SERVICE LAW, NO TENURE OR PERMANENCE ACCRUES TO AN INCUMBENT IN THIS POSITION BY VIRTUE OF SUCH APPOINTMENT.

Qualifications

  1. Five years of full-time satisfactory experience acquired within the last ten years as an elevator mechanic; or

  2. Not less than four and one-half years of the experience described in ""1"" above plus one of the following:

A) At least 6 months of closely related experience in the repair and maintenance of electrical or electromechanical control systems, or electrical, hydraulic or mechanical components of the following: escalators, drawbridges, aircraft, rail cars, or mechanical doors; or

B) At least 600 hours of training acquired at a trade or technical school or vocational high school or completed post-secondary education, approved by a state's Department of Education or comparable governmental agency, with a major course of study in mechanical, electromechanical, electrical or electronic technology or closely related field.

License Requirements

At the time of appointment, candidates will be required to possess a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
