Business Unit/Role Specific Info

The Global Risk & Compliance Organization (GRC) independently oversee the company’s risk-taking and risk management activities, including the comprehensive identification, management, and mitigation of risks within the Company’s risk appetite. GRC ensures the company operates in a safe, sound and fully compliant manner within all applicable regulatory expectations. We create and maintain the overall risk management framework while ensuring legal and regulatory compliance.

Role Overview:

The Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) & Strategic Initiatives team within ERM&RO provides an independent view of risks faced by American Express and is responsible for aggregating the risk profile for the Company. The team is focused on key risk management activities including but not limited to risk identification, owning the risk appetite framework and independent oversight principles, supporting the aggregate risk assessment for the Company, and leading key projects that deliver on the strategic priorities of the Head of Enterprise Risk Management and Risk Oversight.

In this role, the candidate is expected to lead two important functions within ERM&RO: (1) New Product Approval (NPA) governance and risk management – ensuring that our product launches are compliant to risk and regulatory expectations and that our brand and customers are protected; (2) the Control and Compliance Program - that encourage prudent risk-taking behavior and reinforce long-term risk management objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the governance and risk management of the New Product Approval (NPA) process, ensuring compliance with OCC Bulletin 2017-44.

  • Enforce the approval framework for all new product initiatives, ensuring proper documentation, risk assessments, and monitoring mechanisms are in place.

  • Collaborate with senior executives to ensure all risk acceptance decisions are well-documented, justified, and approved at the appropriate levels of authority.

  • Lead the development of Control and Compliance frameworks that encourage prudent risk-taking behavior and reinforce long-term risk management objectives.

  • Design metrics that reflect both financial and non-financial risk performance across different risk areas.

  • Establish and manage the Risk Acceptance/Memo Program to formalize the process of accepting risks.

  • Lead cross-functional teams to assess risks across the organization and facilitate discussions on risk acceptance, new product risks, and compensation incentives with business leaders.

  • Drive continuous improvement of risk governance processes, ensuring alignment with regulatory expectations and industry best practices.

  • Produce regular reports to the Executive Committees, highlighting key risks, governance decisions, and program outcomes.

Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Finance, Risk Management, or related field; Master’s degree or MBA preferred.

  • Minimum of 5-7 years of risk management experience or related disciplines, specific experience in Enterprise Risk Management, Product Governance, Risk Acceptances, or Control and Compliance is a plus.

  • Strong understanding of financial markets, products, and regulatory requirements impacting risk management.

  • Proven track record of designing and implementing enterprise-wide risk management frameworks and methodologies.

  • Excellent written & verbal communication, presentation, and stakeholder management skills.

  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities, including the ability to build and motivate high-performing teams

  • Ability and comfort in working in a newly formed risk management areas of focus under ambiguity; and changing landscape of prioritization

Qualifications

Salary Range: $130,000.00 to $205,000.00 annually bonus equity (if applicable) benefits
