The AI & Data team is the 100-person innovative corporate Data Science group within New York Life, led by Chief Data & Analytics Officer. You will lead a team of model validators, who use their predictive and AI modeling knowledge to review and validate a wide variety of models built at NYL. You will work closely with data scientists and analytics engineers to ensure proper modeling processes are followed during the model development lifecycle. You’ll be an instrumental leader of the Model Validation team, part of the wider Model Governance team.

Responsibilities:

  • Model validation: Perform independent validations of the data, base models, fine-tuning steps for Gen AI/Large Language models to be deployed by the company for business use.

  • Methodology review and leadership: Review Gen AI model designs, explore methodology options, and stay up-to-date on Gen AI/Large Language model research, especially on Gen AI performance evaluation metrics.

  • Build challenger solutions as needed to compare with the Gen AI solution being validated.

  • Write model validation reports summarizing findings from the validations.

  • Establish standards and improve process efficiency for Gen AI Model Validation.

  • Effectively challenge Gen AI developers on their decisions.

  • Present model validation findings to business partners and senior leaders.

  • Builds and maintains Gen AI performance monitoring reports/dashboards with limited supervision.

  • Review reporting results with relevant stakeholders when necessary.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: Masters degree or higher in statistics, computer science, data science, mathematics, economics/finance, engineering, or other technical field.

  • 4+ years in model governance or risk management, or predictive analytics building predictive or Gen AI models.

  • Prior experience developing or validating Generative AI/Large Language Models strongly preferred. Ideally this would include experience with training, fine-tuning, and prompt engineering.

  • Detailed recent NLP experience (basic techniques, large language models, transformers, etc.)

  • Expertise in statistical modeling techniques such as linear regression, logistic regression, survival analysis, GBM/xgboost, neural nets, feature engineering and selection, and model performance measures (AUC, recall, precision, etc).

  • Substantial prior programming experience in languages such as Python, R, SQL

  • Experience working with insurance or consumer financial data is a plus

  • Strong verbal and written communications skills, listening and teamwork skills, and effective presentation skills
