Job Description

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The NYPD strives to foster a safe and fair city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations and solve the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between the people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation.

The Office of Management Analysis and Planning (OMAP) is seeking a skilled and highly motivated Research Scientist to join the Management Analysis Section (MAS) team. The candidate will assist in reviewing research proposals and reports from internal/external sources, liaising with stakeholders to ensure data quality assurance and quality control, conducting analyses using Department data for internal and external stakeholders and implementing innovative ways to see and understand data trends, outliers and patterns.

The City Research Scientist will execute a wide range of data collection activities including planning for and implementing focus groups, interviews, and surveys; conduct background research and literature reviews on a range of public safety topics by collecting and analyzing both quantitative and qualitative information; draft sections of reports, research briefs, PowerPoint presentations and other documents; contribute to other products that translate research for policy and practice; work on a variety of projects that include both analyzing extant data and helping develop research designs and conduct evaluations of new policies; and assist with project management and administrative tasks.

Monday - Friday 8x4 or 10x6

Qualifications

  1. For Assignment Level I (only physical, biological and environmental sciences and public health) A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health.

To be appointed to Assignment Level II and above, candidates must have:

  1. A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or

  2. A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or

  3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least a master's degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in "2" above. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in "1" and "2" above.

Appointments to this position are subject to a minimum probationary period of one year.
