Scholastic Associate Editor, Choices in New York, New York

Job Description:

THE OPPORTUNITY

The associate editor for Choices will be closely involved in all aspects of producing a health and life-skills magazines for students in grades 6-12 nationwide. In addition to writing and editing health and life-skills articles for students, the associate editor will work closely with freelancers to create supplemental educational resources, such as reading comprehension activities, Spanish translations of articles, and vocabulary slideshows. The associate editor will work both independently and collaboratively to help shepherd each issue of the magazine from conception to publication. The associate editor will also act as chief liaison for student and teacher advisory boards. Additionally, the assoicate editor will assist in developing content for videos and other digital assets. Other duties as needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Overseeing creation and production of freelancer-provided educational assets such as skill sheets and lesson plans; assisting in freelancer-provided Spanish language translations of each issue; proofreading each issue and liaising with professional proofreader for each issue.

  • Writing and/or editing at least two stories per issue, with the opportunity to take on more writing assignments with time

  • Maintaining student advisory board and assigning and top-editing student-written debate articles; maintaining teacher advisory board, sending out surveys and communications, coordinating in-person and remote class visits, and monitoring and updating Facebook page.

  • Additional administrative tasks including maintaining payment system for freelancers, mailing magazines to contributors, and other tasks as needed.

  • Preparing and shepherding e-newsletters and subscriber surveys through publication process.

  • Assisting with brainstorming ideas for and writing scripts for videos for Choices website.

Qualifications

HOW YOU CAN FIT (Qualifications)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

The ideal candidate will be able to multitask effectively in a fast-paced environment and prioritize short- and long-term assignments. Must have the ability to effectively work independently, take initiative on tasks, and collaborate with others both across the Magazines Plus group as well as outside of Scholastic. Must also have the ability to write clear, captivating, age-appropriate articles that will engage students in middle and high school. Meticulous proofreading skills required. Creativity and a passion for producing high-interest content for students is essential. Knowledge of trends in education — including evolving standards, curricula, and assessments — is a plus, as is familiarity with current research on health and life-skills for teens. Familiarity with Spanish preferred.

Experience and Education:

Experience: A minimum of three years’ writing/editing experience, preferably in educational/children’s publishing
