Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP Associate Director, Financial Analysis & Reporting in New York, New York
Description/Job Summary
This role will report to the Director of Financial Analysis & Reporting and will be responsible for the oversight of the Financial Analysis, Financial Reporting, Rates & Compliance and Financial Business Intelligence teams. The Associate Director of the Financial Analysis & Reporting group will work closely with the Director in leading the implementation of best practices, new processes, technologies and resources. The role assists in providing support and expertise in all aspects of financial analytics, complex pricing data modeling, competitive analysis, financial reporting design and implementation, the Firm's fee arrangements and outside counsel guideline compliance. This individual will be required to collaborate across all levels of Firm personnel, including Partners, and various administrative departments, including different groups within Accounting.
Responsibilities/Duties
Supervise the operation of the Financial Analysis and Reporting team, including training new employees, managing the day-to-day activities to ensure accurate and timely work product, assign projects, monitor work in progress and provide resolutions as appropriate
Ensure department is staffed appropriately; oversee recruitment, training, development and drive change management related to Finance department priorities
Coach, mediate and administer corrective action to staff as needed; conduct yearly performance evaluations of assigned staff
Work alongside the Director to review, recommend and implement process improvements, perform ongoing analysis and evaluation of key performance indicators
Increase engagement with Partners through deepening personal relationships and building credibility, including marketing the capabilities of the group and providing training and mentorship to improve their financial acumen
Coordinate various Firmwide initiatives, including the annual business planning process, revenue projections and the partner promotion process
Work with the Financial Reporting and Financial Business Intelligence teams to enrich dashboard metrics and visual reporting to support strategic initiatives and drive decision making
Enhance existing financial models and status reports, utilizing internal and external programming resources, to support attorneys in forecasting and monitoring alternative fee agreements and budgets
Assist with analyzing profitability across all levels of the Firm (ie. Practice, Office, Client/Matter, etc.) including trends and actual to projected revenue and expense analyses.
Provide actionable insights to Firm leadership regarding financial modelling, forecasts and profitability modeling through ongoing monitoring and analysis of current key performance indicators, profitability levers and financial results
Ensure compliance with the Firm's procedures, policies and guidelines
Assist with special projects and other duties as assigned
Required Skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 (expert-level Excel and PowerPoint skills)
Strong communication and presentation skills with the ability to present complex and detailed financial information concisely to higher levels of management in a confident and professional manner
Excellent project management and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage high and varied workloads
Advanced analytical and problem solving skills with the ability to utilize tools to compile and analyze data, and recommend and/or implement solutions to complex problems
Ability to create intricate Excel models and provide pricing scenarios for discussion with senior management.
Flexibility to adapt to all work situations and work varied hours
Working knowledge of basic compliance and internal control requirements
Required Experience
- 10+ years of directly related experience in the field of financial management and analysis in a law firm or professional services organization
Preferred Experience
Experience with Elite or other legal billing system preferred
Understanding of SAS, SQL and Power BI
Required Education
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or other related field
Preferred Education
- MBA or other post-graduate degree is highly preferred

Salary Information
NY only: The estimated base salary range for this position is $250k to $300k at the time of posting.
The actual salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job. This role is exempt meaning it is not overtime pay eligible.
