  • Salary Range: $165,000-$185,000
The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Dean of the Columbia School of Social Work (CSSW), the Associate Dean oversees the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) efforts for the entire CSSW community (students, faculty, and staff). As an integral member of the school's leadership team, the Associate Dean collaborates with the Dean, the Vice Dean, the Dean's Chief of Staff, the Associate Dean for Communications Strategy, Development & Alumni Affairs, and other leaders to design strategies that foster cultural awareness and civil discourse and participates in strategic planning activities. The Associate Dean designs and implements robust programs, services, and communications that promote diversity, inclusion, social justice, and civil discourse throughout the CSSW community.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a member of the Dean's senior leadership team and participate in the school's short- and long-range strategic planning activities for diversity and inclusion initiatives.
  • Lead the shaping of an inclusive campus environment that supports students' success as learners, leaders, and citizens. Inform CSSW senior leadership of any climate issues or concerns related to their respective areas.
  • Develop, coordinate, and evaluate a portfolio of annual programs designed to encourage student cultural and social awareness, initiate meaningful inclusivity/multicultural dialogues, and foster diversity and multiculturalism on campus.
  • Create culturally affirming programs and events that nurture a sense of belonging, build community, and encourage critical reflection of one's own and others' personal and social identities, including intersections of identities.
  • Develop learning outcomes and comprehensive, ongoing assessments of diversity and inclusion initiatives.
  • Work with the Assistant Director of DEI to oversee the Professional Development and Self-Awareness (PDSA) initiative and school-wide PDSA programming and supervise the student coordinators who support the initiative.
  • Serve as a resource to students as they navigate the campus culture, providing leadership in sustaining and enriching a campus climate that is welcoming to all members of our community.
  • Provide a support network, including outreach, advocacy, and other support services for all multicultural students.
  • Provide individual and group mentoring to students from underrepresented groups. Counsel students who feel marginalized and assist them with accessing various supportive services.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, School committees, and other offices that share the goals of diversity and inclusivity.
  • Work in an advisory capacity with the conveners of the Power, Racism, Oppression, and Privilege (PROP) curriculum.
  • Partner with the Associate Dean of Faculty Development and Academic Affairs on initiatives and programs related to faculty development, including (among others) faculty support spaces.
  • Manage staff recruitment, performance evaluations, and training and professional development of the DEI staff. Oversee unit priorities and workflow and hold decision-making authority on staff changes in coordination with CSSW HR.
  • Cultivate and sustain strategic relationships with School faculty, staff, and University offices (including the Office of University Life) to resolve student issues.
  • Represent CSSW on various school and university-sponsored initiatives, committees, and programs to facilitate communication, avoid duplication of efforts, and complement current efforts.
  • Collaborate with DEI leaders across the University to help us to build trust and connections across the University's campuses.
  • Serve as a resource to leaders in University Life to advise on programming that can enhance the student experience, connectedness, and community of belonging across the many schools and programs across the Columbia system.
  • Attend senior-level administrative meetings with or on behalf of the Dean.
  • Conduct research on best practices and identify trends in diversity and inclusion programming for students at peer institutions to anticipate evolving trends and make recommendations for policy, process, and programming changes.
  • Monitor and maintain up-to-date knowledge of school and university policies, communicating, documenting, and processing information to ensure all staff are fully trained.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree is required, and a minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in leading diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts - or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Other Requirements

  • Evening and weekend hours may be required.
  • Must be creative, energetic, team-oriented, and possess excellent presentation and communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and customer service orientation are required.
  • Computer literacy is essential, with preferred experience in website development and MS Office.
  • Strong management skills to supervise office staff.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Social Work or a related field is highly desirable.
