Job Description

The NYC Department of Probation (DOP) is a world leader in working creatively and effectively engaging with people under court-mandated community supervision. and decrease recidivism.

Under the general direction of the Deputy Commissioner, with wide latitude for independent initiative and judgment, will have management responsibility for overall planning, directing and administering activities for the Department of Probation. The Associate Commissioner will have overall management responsibility for a borough’s Adult Services. Specific duties will include, but not be limited to:

RESPONSIBITLIES INCLUDE:

  • Oversees the effective management and delivery of probation services in both the preparation of investigation reports and the provision of effective supervision.

  • Participates in the development and formulation of departmental policies.

  • Maintains liaison with judges, Corporation Counsel, defense counsel, the Division of Youth and Family Justice, ACS, Police Department and various other city agencies.

  • Provides direction to Directors regarding branch administration.

  • Monitors staffing level and the deployment of personnel to ensure maximum productivity.

  • Analyzes data to evaluate progress or deficiencies and perform the corrective action, where necessary, to allow for continuous improvement.

  • Holds regular team meetings to report performance outcomes, review and discuss progress/challenges, and develop plans to ensure that milestones and outcomes are met.

  • Participates as a member of the DOP Executive Team and Senior Leadership Team.

  • Working directly with the Deputy Commissioner, assists in developing and monitoring new initiatives and projects.

Qualifications

A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and four years of full-time paid experience in counseling or casework in a recognized agency adhering to acceptable standards in probation, parole, social services, psychiatric or medical social work or related field, at least 18 months of which must have been in a responsible supervisory, administrative or consultative capacity performing activities related to the duties of the position; or

A combination of education and/or experience equivalent to “1” above. However, all candidates must have at least 18 months of experience in an administrative, managerial, executive, consultative, executive capacity or supervising personnel performing activities related to the duties of the position.
