FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The Department of Urban Studies at the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies (SLU) invites applications for two tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor to begin at the start of the Fall 2024 semester or as soon thereafter as is practical in succeeding semesters.

The positions will be located within the Urban Studies Department, and the successful candidate will have shared teaching and programmatic responsibilities with the Leadership for Democracy and Social Justice Institute. Candidates must have a proven record of research and publication, with preference to scholars with demonstrated expertise in social movements, social and economic change, economic democracy and Community development, and community and/or labor organizations. We welcome candidates with scholarship in the fields of urban studies, geography, sociology, political science, anthropology, ethnic studies, and related academic fields. Candidates who can demonstrate meaningful engagement in social justice and labor organizing and/or social movements are especially encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and MA courses on social movements, power and strategy for social change, community and labor organizations, community development, public policy, and research methods, as well as take on significant leadership role in departmental and school service. Candidates must have a commitment to teaching and mentoring a diverse student population.

These faculty positions are made possible by a partnership among the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies (SLU), the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership, City College of New York, and with substantial support for the position provided by Leadership for Democracy and Social Justice, the recently launched CUNY institute focused on training and supporting early and mid-career social justice leaders nationally. The successful candidate will play a role in the intellectual development of and instruction in the Leadership for Democracy and Social Justice Institute.

About the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies

The CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies, established in 2018, is explicitly dedicated to public service and social justice. Offering the only interdisciplinary curriculum in labor and urban studies in the nation, SLU awards undergraduate and graduate degrees in both of those fields, as well as credit-bearing professional certificates in areas such as public administration, public policy, cooperative economic development, health care administration, organizing, and labor relations. SLU also collaborates with New York City’s labor unions and other CUNY schools to offer a broad range of college-credit programs designed to give workers the academic and technical skills they need for professional advancement and economic mobility.

About Leadership for Democracy and Social Justice

Leadership for Democracy and Social Justice is a new CUNY institute designed to support a diverse cohort of leaders from the communities at the forefront of social justice movements, who can build collective power that can be wielded anywhere, from the streets to the halls of Congress. The institute helps early and mid-career leaders in social justice movements build power across disciplines and with the communities that are at the forefront of social change. Existing models of leadership in social justice are often tied to one theory of change or a single community of practice, whether that’s street protests, workplace organizing, or lobbying on Capitol Hill. But a new generation of leaders needs to fight for power across movements and from outside and inside existing institutions. These leaders want to fundamentally understand power: how to build it, how to use it, and how to share it with our communities. Leadership for Democracy and Social Justice is an initiative of the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies and the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership at City College of New York. https://www.socialjusticeleadership.org/
