The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

The Assistant Director for Student Affairs reports to the Director for Student Affairs and supports critical work, including freedom of expression, student activism, and the Rules of University conduct.

Under the Director's oversight, the Assistant Director will support the review of student conduct cases through Columbia's Rules of University Policy process. They will focus on education, individual accountability, and community responsibility. This role involves conducting investigations, facilitating informal resolutions, providing information for Board hearing panels, and managing all related documentation, including notices, file reviews, outcome letters, and associated correspondence. Adhering to FERPA regulations and relevant guidelines, the Assistant Director supports all parties involved in the Rules process and refers students to other resources or departments as needed for further assistance.

Responsibilities

Student Conduct Rules Review

  • Work under the direction of the Director of Student Affairs to conduct reviews through the Rules of University Conduct process.

  • Under the Director's supervision, implement informal resolutions of Rules violations that emphasizes education and individual accountability, in addition to personal and community responsibility.

  • Assist with the Rules investigatory process, including gathering information, fact finding, file creation, and referral to the University Judicial Board for a hearing.

  • Administration of all related documentation, including notice, file review information, outcome letter and associated correspondence.

  • Assist the Director with oversight of sanctions implemented by the University Judicial Board.

  • Schedule interviews and other logistics as they relate to reviews and hearings.

  • Within the parameters of FERPA regulations and as applicable, advise all parties involved in the Rules of University Conduct process.

  • Refer students to other resources or departments for additional assistance, as approved by the Director.

  • For cases appealed, compile student file information and review file information with the appellate officer.

Student Organization Advising

  • Work with the University Senate to support the Interschool Governing Board (IGB), including advising recognized student organizations, financial management and organizational development.

  • Advise students organizations recognized by IGB, including education on policy, event planning and financial management.

Education, training, and program development

  • Assists the Director in efforts to educate the University community about the Rules process to create transparency and share resources available.

  • Schedule workshops and manage all logistical aspects as they relate to reviews and hearings.

  • Provide information, training and coaching to administrators, student groups, and student leaders.

Collaboration and critical communications

  • Supports the Director to collaborate with departments throughout the University to coordinate delivery of services and ensure student needs are met.

  • Ensure all student support efforts are transparent to students and stakeholders. Serve as a liaison and educator for graduate and undergraduate schools regarding the Rules review process.

  • Draft communications and reports.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor's degree and/or its equivalent is required and 3-5 years of related experience in the areas of student organization advising, residential life, student conduct, behavioral intervention or counseling. The applicant demonstrates and has an understanding of FERPA, Clery, Title IX and trends pertaining to student activism, protest response, student conduct reviews. The Assistant Director must possess excellent analytical, organizational and interpersonal skills as well as the ability to exercise superior judgment and discretion. The applicant has demonstrated ability to handle multiple priorities while maintaining a high level of professionalism and attention to detail. The applicant will be comfortable working in a dynamic, fast-paced and detail-oriented environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree preferred in higher education, student personnel administration, counseling, law, social work, psychology or related field.
