Educational Alliance, Inc. Afterschool Group Leader in New York, New York

JOB PURPOSE

Group Leaders are enthusiastic, highly motivated role models who are directly responsible for the well-being and safety of participants in the After School community.

SCOPE OF INFLUENCE

  • Direct client group: Children ages K-5th grade

  • Directly supervised by After School Program Manager

  • Will collaborate with Social Work Interns and Teachers when necessary

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Attend all days of staff orientation before After School (September 2023)

  • Attend all scheduled days of After School and monthly staff meetings during the year (After School runs from September 18th, 2023-June 5, 2024)

  • Communicate regularly and effectively with Afterschool Program Manager

  • Work harmoniously with assigned co-Group-Leader(s) and Social Work Interns

  • Maintain standards of Afterschool conduct, behavior management protocols, and inclusion

  • When working with children and fellow staff, uphold and implement Afterschool values (Personal Growth, Empathy, Respect, and Passion)

  • Attend regular supervision and participate in evaluation processes

  • Must adhere to agency and site-specific safety standards

  • Comply with city and departmental rules, regulations, policies and procedures

  • Support youth development through After School programming which includes, but is not limited to: Art, Sports, Science, Music, Theatre, Academic Support, Shabbat programming, and more!

  • Effectively develop a rapport with participants and parents, maintaining safety and confidentiality

Afterschool Activities

  • Assume responsibility for the physical and mental health and safety of children in the Afterschool Community

  • Keep a record of student activity, behavior, and injuries/accidents

  • When assigned, pick-Up children from local schools and safely transport them to the 14th Street Y

  • Actively participate in and support campers throughout all activities

  • Provide quality supervision at all times (e.g. during school pick-up, in assigned homeroom, during snack, throughout activities and all transitional periods)

  • Assist Teachers with children’s needs during activities and step in to lead if/when necessary

  • Be open to leading at least one easy-going class a week such as boardgames, ball games, yoga, watercolors, with support from After School leadership etc.

  • Encourage all participants to participate & be their on-site daily support system

  • Focus on social dynamics & friendship building of assigned children

  • When assigned to required monthly swim duty, ensure that children are safe and abiding by pool rules.

  • Be responsible for overall cleanliness and organization of spaces and supplies

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Required Knowledge and Ability

  • Availability to work on site at the 14th Street Y from 2:30pm-6:15pm at least 2 days per week from September 18th - June 5th and staff orientation in September

  • Bachelor's degree or currently pursuing a degree with at least 1 year of professional experience working with youth

  • Previous experience working with children ages 5 to 13 years old strongly preferred.

  • CPR/First Aid Certifications or the ability/willingness to obtain one

  • Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with all community members, including modeling and facilitating positive conflict resolution

  • Ability to be a mentor and be a resource to students, staff, families and embrace/foster cultural inclusiveness
