The Biotechnology Undergraduate Program in the Department of Plant Biology at the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, Rutgers University invites applicants for a Part time Lecturer teaching position on the New Brunswick/Cook Campus for Fall 2024. The position will be responsible for teaching a course called Bioinformatics. This course is an introduction to the basics of algorithms used to cast problems of molecular biology in terms of bioinformatics. Largely Python-based, it will teach bioinformatics concepts, principles, and techniques within the framework of basic shell scripting and web-based databases/tools. Students are expected to have a basic background in computer science and data structures, know how to work in a command-line environment and have a basic understanding of programming/ scripting. A graduate level version of the course should also be offered with extra requirements for graduate students.

The successful candidate will report to the Undergraduate Program Director in Biotechnology and the Department Chair in Plant Biology, and will be required to administer and instruct the course, including a computer terminal-based dry laboratory on the Rutgers campus. The course will be offered in-person.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
Master or PhD Degree in Bioinformatics, Molecular Biology, or related discipline. Demonstrated knowledge in bioinformatics and relevant program languages.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
A basic knowledge of Bioinformatic platforms and the scripting needed to use them. Sufficient knowledge in the areas of genomics, genetics, molecular biology to connect the biology to informatics.

Overview
Bioinformatics is a required course for undergraduates within the Bioinformatics option of the Biotechnology major. The course will serve those students as well as other interested undergraduates. A modified version of the course to serve at the graduate level will serve in several graduate programs, possibly even forming part of a graduate level certificate program.
