Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Laboratory Technician for the department of Medicine at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.Reports directly to Principal Investigator. Performs professional entry-level experiments using standard molecular and epigenetic techniques. Performs cell culture , DNA/RNA purifications, TaqMan, sequencing library preparations, ATAC-Seq and other genotyping methodologies, cell culture , ELISA and other experiments as needed for multiple research projects. Keeps records of work performed and develops /maintains a database as required for both research subject recruitment and sample management. Collects, sorts, and processes samples. Performs analysis, and analyzes data using established protocols and new pipelines using various applications including those designed for sequence data (exome, RNA , whole genome and targeted). Assists with QC of genotype and sequencing data. Organizes large databases of genotype, gene expression, serotypes and clinical phenotypes. Assists with various genetic association analyses, whole genome sequencing analyses, genotype-phenotype analyses, genotype or sequence database and bioinformatics correlation analyses, haplotype construction , and other statistical analyses. Maintains and keeps the workplace and laboratory organized in a clean and sate manner in accordance with established procedures. Serves as an assistant in the performance of experiments. Trains and leads students through various laboratory related activities. Assists with inventory and ordering of supplies. Completes work under immediate and close supervision, with specific instructions on routine or semi-routine work and/or within established work parameters for the unit. Makes decisions or choices following standard practices and procedures. Work is usually reviewed upon completion. Performs professional work requiring general knowledge and basic application and use of concepts, theories, terminology , and practices with some independent research and troubleshooting of methodology as needed.Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Performs experiments using standard and advanced molecular biology techniques as assigned including DNA/RNA purifications, TaqMan, sequencing library preparations, ATAC-Seq and other genotyping methodologies, cell culture and ELISA. Research and analysis is conducted using various methods and in accordance with established procedure.
  • Keeps accurate and up-to-date records of work performed and maintains a database as required. Data is shared with colleagues and published in scientific journals.
  • Performs and assists with QC of genotype, DNA and RAN sequencing data, ELISA and phenotype data, bioinformatics correlations and assists with statistical analysis of data. Preliminary analysis is conducted in accordance with established procedures.
  • Maintains and keeps the workplace and laboratory organized in a clean and safe manner in accordance with established procedures.
  • When called upon, serves as an assistant in the performance of experiments. Trains and leads students through various laboratory related activities. In this regard, work collaboratively with others.
  • Collects, sorts, processes samples, performs analysis and presents the results. Analysis is conducted using various methods and in accordance with established procedures.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Associate's Degree in a relevant science.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Molecular Biology with laboratory experience in molecular biology techniques as well as coursework and/or experience in computational/mathematical biology with some programming skills preferred for database design/management and bioinformatics including analysis of sequence data (FastQC, Cufflinks and others).
  • Specific experience with techniques listed in the job summary preferred (DNA/RNA purification, ATAC-Seq, Sequence Library Prep, phenotype and other clinical database experience).

  • Physical Demands: Sitting, standing, walking, reaching, kneeling, talking and hearing. No special vision requirements. Some lifting may be required: laboratory items and /or boxes up to 25 lbs. Computer data input.
  • Work Environment: Lab environment. Moderate noise. Exposure to blood, excrement, antineoplastic drugs and possible exposure to infectious and communicable diseases. Universal precautions are mandatory. Exposure to hazardous chemicals. Follows all safety precautions in laboratory.
