The School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) is the largest academic unit at Rutgers University and the center of the undergraduate experience on the Rutgers-New Brunswick campus and is comprised of 41 academic departments spanning the liberal arts.

Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Developmental Specialist for the Office for Diversity and Academic Success in the Sciences (ODASIS) within the School of Arts & Sciences. Under the direction of the Associate Director, this position is responsible for developing, managing, and maintaining standards for the curriculum implemented with all Organic Chemistry and Upper level science students enrolled in the (ODASIS).Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Develops programs and implementing strategies to increase the retention of students within the ODASIS department.
  • Coordinates and tracks the supplemental instruction and study group and/or hall programs within ODASIS.
  • Hires, trains, and supervises staff.
  • Provides counseling and academic advising activities that services the special needs of the underrepresented students and/or minority students enrolled in ODASIS programs.
  • Assists the Associate Director with the recruitment, implementation and monitoring of the MCAT and GRE credit-bearing preparatory programs.
  • Develops and implements funding strategies to include soliciting support from corporations, foundations, and other sources that will provide equipment and resources, or financial support not available from the University and/or writing grant proposals and evaluating existing programs.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree preferably in a STEM Major (Chemistry, Biology, etc.), higher education, academic advising, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • A minimum of two years relevant experience.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Good communication, persuasion, and diplomatic skills.
  • Computer literacy to include industry standard software.
  • Must be able to handle multitasking by prioritizing daily tasks and responsibilities while providing counseling to numerous students and making important academics-related decisions responsibly.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with the issues affecting the achievement of underrepresented individuals in the fields of science, mathematics, engineering, and technology.
  • Strong familiarity with Rutgers University social, political and academic environment.
  • Familiarity with STEM majors, more specifically, Organic Chemistry.
