Position Overview

The Director of R&D will plan, conduct, and manage product, materials and product development activities consistent with Shockwave Medical’s strategic plan. Responsible for catheter and implant development programs. Manage R&D resources related to catheter/implant development programs.

Essential Job Functions

  • Apply engineering knowledge and managerial skills to design and develop new catheters, stents, coatings, materials and components as well as product improvements.

  • Coordinate activities with IVL group in developing, managing and executing plans as needed.

  • Creation and facilitation of patents and other intellectual property.

  • Provide periodic updates to Senior Management on project status.

  • Supervise and coordinate activities of assigned engineers, technicians, and contractors.

  • Help estimate staffing requirements and skills needed to complete projects on time and within budget.

  • Provide leadership, goal setting, communications, and facilitation skills as needed to guide and motivate project personnel.

  • Contribute to planning in full compliance with company's Design Control requirements and consistent with applicable regulatory requirements.

  • Responsible for ensuring documentation is consistent with the requirements of the company's quality system.

  • Assure appropriate training and skill development is provided for project staff as needed.

  • Assisting in the translation of the Market Specifications into detailed engineering specifications.

  • New product testing, including comparison testing with competitor products, bench testing, animals testing and clinical evaluation, and including protocol and test report documentation.

  • Participate in and/or lead Design Reviews as needed.

  • Support customer facing activities as needed.

  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 15 years’ prior industry experience with at least 5 years’ prior management experience

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science or equivalent experience. M.S. Preferred.

  • Excellent communication, personnel management, and time management skills required.

  • Proven history of catheter or other medical device development. Catheter and implant experience is desirable.

  • Working knowledge of current regulatory requirements including Design Control.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple priorities.

  • Operate in a team and/or independently while demonstrating flexibility to changing requirements.

Additional Information:

The base pay range for this position is $160,000 - $276,000

The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation’s performance over a calendar/performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company’s discretion on an individual basis.

  • Holiday pay, including Floating Holidays – up to 13 days per calendar year

  • Work, Personal and Family Time - up to 40 hours per calendar year
