Craven County Government Transportation Dispatcher in New Bern, North Carolina
Performs dispatching work involving the scheduling of transportation for clients, assignment of routes to vehicles and drivers, and other clerical work as needed with the Transportation Department - Craven Area Rural Transit System (CARTS).
Essential Functions
This employee coordinates the vehicle driving and related functions for the transportation department. Primary duties include scheduling trips, assigning routes to vehicles and drivers, dispatching drivers, preparing and maintaining reports, and taking and coordinating requests for transportation services from eligible clients, participating human service agencies, and members of the general public. The employee provides information on transportation procedures and handles other clerical duties as assigned by the Transportation Director. Must possess excellent customer service skills. May be required to serve during times of disaster.
Minimum Education and Experience
Graduation from high school, with experience in secretarial or clerical work and computer experience desirable; or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of the geography of the service delivery area, including specific landmarks, the names and locations of streets, roads, highways and other specific geographical information. General knowledge of office practices and procedures. General knowledge of arithmetic, grammar, spelling and vocabulary. Ability to make computations rapidly and accurately. Ability to read and compare facts and figures carefully and accurately. Ability to maintain a variety of clerical records and to compile data from such records. Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with departmental employees. Ability to handle stressful situations with minimum direct supervision.
Additional Information
The Transportation Dispatcher is required to assist with on call responsibilities. This position is subject to drug and alcohol pre-employment, random, reasonablesuspicion, and post-accident testing.
