The Position
Public Information Officers manage the public relations and information program for an agency on a statewide basis; write media releases, newsletters, and informational brochures; produce audiovisual presentations and take photographs.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training. Under general supervision of the Deputy Director and Director of the Governor's Office of Energy, the Public Information Officer 1 (Underfilling Public Information Officer 2) performs public relations and communications work in planning, organizing and/or public information, media relations, and communication programs. This position will be filled in either Carson City or Las Vegas, depending on the location of the selected applicant. The incumbent will have knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations. Operational characteristics, services, and activities of assigned programs and functions. Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and other specialized applications related to the area of assignment. The incumbent will have the principles and techniques to plan, organize, and coordinate local government public relations, communications, and media relations programs. Including techniques in preparing, producing, and disseminating information to the general public, news media, schools, and the community, utilizing all major media of communication.
The incumbent will prepare and disseminate information to the press through a variety of communication media, including photography, graphic arts, copy layout, and radio and television programming. Principles and techniques of establishing and maintaining good relations with news media and other public groups. Principles, techniques, and practices of journalism, expository prose, and editing; preparation, composition, layout, production, and dissemination of educational, informational, and promotional materials. The incumbent will have the ability to present to the public and other groups and prepare visual aids as needed for the presentation. In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in journalism, English, public or community relations, communications or closely related field and two years of professional experience in public relations or public information including writing media releases and newsletters, preparing speeches and multimedia presentations; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.Special Requirements
