Position Summary/Description:

The Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering in the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is recruiting an exceptional candidate for a postdoctoral research fellowship in Environmental Sciences and Engineering. The fellow will join an exciting group of interdisciplinary researchers working within the National Science Foundation funded Engineering Research Center for Precision Microbiome Engineering (PreMiEr). PreMiEr’s vision is to develop an integrated framework that enables the bioinformed design of smart and healthy built environments while also broadly advancing microbiome engineering technologies (https://premier-microbiome.org). The successful applicant is expected to lead design and implementation of experiments (your own and those of other researchers) in a PreMiEr test bed, specifically an instrumented test house on the Duke University campus. A wide range of experiments are planned for the test house to develop a better understanding of the relationships between the built environment and its microbial community.

Roles & Responsibilities Include: The successful candidate will coordinate, communicate among the PreMiEr community, partially manage the research test site and will be responsible for experiment scheduling and baseline building characterization. They will develop and carry out experiments to test their own hypotheses consistent with their interests and the PreMiEr goals. They are expected to report on their work through publications, and presentations. They are expected to mentor graduate students, contribute to summer undergraduate REU training as appropriate, and participate in the PreMiEr community of scholars. In addition to mentoring from the PI and other PreMiEr colleagues within the PreMiEr center, there are many opportunities for training including a seminar series, a literature club, workshops, site training visits, training on entrepreneurship and networking opportunities with industry partners.

Education and Experience:

Given the nature of the position, we prefer an individual with experience in indoor air quality, microbiology, building science and/or aerosol science laboratory or field work. The successful candidate will have a record of publishing in leading peer-reviewed journals.
