Position Summary/Description:

The Program on Health Workforce Research and Policy at the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research is seeking an Associate Director of Graduate Medical Education ( GME ) Development to serve as a key member of our dynamic team. The Program on Health Workforce Research and Policy’s conducts studies to inform health workforce policy at national, state and regional levels. The Program provides policymakers with data-driven evidence to inform decisions that affect health professionals, educators, employers, and the general public. The UNC System Medical Education and Training Fund Technical Assistance Program is supporting the development of new training programs in underserved communities in North Carolina to expand the physician workforce.

The Associate Director of GME Development will primarily support the UNC System Medical Education and Training Fund and assist with other state GME initiative analysis and technical assistance, as needed. Duties include creating workplans, monitoring deadlines, and developing and monitoring technical assistance program budgets. The Associate Director of GME Development will utilize quantitative and qualitative research skills to facilitate project completion. The Associate Director of GME Development will report to Dr. Emily Hawes, principal investigator and project director for the UNC System Medical Education and Training Fund Technical Assistance Program. The Associate Director of GME Development will help manage technical assistance offerings and content expertise provided to UNC and ECU schools of medicine while establishing underserved GME tracks and/or programs in varying medical specialties.

This position will be responsible for engagement in strategic planning processes with key stakeholders, facilitation of partner meetings and peer networks, identification and initial site engagement with rural training sites, development and delivery of education to stakeholders on program development and accreditation, creation of tools and resources to support rural programs and sites, promotion of GME programs to medical students in North Carolina, measurement of outcomes for existing and newly developed programs, and referrals to content expert/consultation as needed by programs. This position will also provide GME development support to the Rural Residency Planning and Development-Technical Assistance Center and Teaching Health Center Planning and Development Technical Assistance Center and RRPD and THCPD grant recipients.

Education and Experience:

Strong knowledge of GME program development and expansion processes and regulations, especially in underserved settings. Three or more years of project management experience.

Essential Skills:

Experience managing GME program development and expansion programming and monitoring. Excellent relationship management skills, strong writing and editing skills, excellent project management skills, familiarity with Microsoft suite applications for information sharing and communications.
