Position Summary :

The Senior Simulation Laboratory Technologist is independently responsible for the comprehensive technology needed to successfully run a state-of-the-art simulation laboratory. Complex problem solving skills are needed to determine whether equipment failures lie with the high (or low) fidelity simulators themselves, the audiovisual needs of both the simulators and the technology in the control rooms, or within the simulation management software itself. The position is expected to support other simulation staff, faculty, and students in the simulation process by operating and trouble-shooting needed technology. While this is a team approach, this position will manage student workers as well as one of the Simulation Lab Nurses who has an interest in learning the complexities of the technologies. The position reports directly into the Simulation Lab Director, working closely with other simulation and informatics staff and faculty.

The Vanderbilt University School of Nursing (VUSN) is ranked #14 in Master’s programs and #11 in DNP programs. VUSN has a rich 20+ year history of distance learning that capitalizes on blended learning to take advantage of needed face-to-face activities such as simulation. The school is also known for its high reputation in nurse practitioner education, nurse managed clinics, and informatics innovations. The PhD and DNP programs are graduating world- class research-focused and practice-focused nurse scholars who are making a difference in our discipline and for patients everywhere.

The simulation lab was originally housed in a 1,290 square feet space and located within Godchaux Hall. With a recent 29,947 square feet addition, an entire floor was allocated for a new simulation lab. With an opening in January of 2019, the new simulation lab is over three times (3,932 sq. ft.) the square footage of the original location. Thirteen bed bays have been designed with their own control booth having direct line of sight to each bed. The facility resembles an acute hospital floor, complete with headwalls, hospital beds, simulated gasses and computer monitors. Additional equipment can be accessed from the adjacent staging/storage areas as required by the simulation. Two ceiling mounted cameras and microphones are essential to control the audio and video recordings for later playback and critique. B-Line Medical ® SimCapture technology allows for seamless capture of audio and high quality video during the simulation encounter, streaming live to faculty and students watching the simulation in real time, as well as recording it for playback during the debrief and assessment sessions. Faculty members can also document critiques of individual performance for process improvement purposes. Additional space in Frist Hall 144 allows for health assessment bays also used with lower level tech trainer equipment when needed.

The simulation team consists of the Simulation Lab Director, and 3 Simulation Lab Nurses. An additional senior level tech person has a 10% work allocation to the area to assist with complex technical problem solving. There is also a dedicated PhD prepared nurse faculty member whose workload consists of working with faculty and staff to develop simulation evaluation studies and preparation of subsequent manuscripts. Budget requests for 2019-2020 will include an additional Simulation Lab Nurse.

A complete 28-member Frist Nursing Informatics Center (FNIC) team provides the technology and informatics support for VUSN. The simulation team is part of this center, and can call on their expertise when needed. Talents range from computer programming, networking, graphic artists, academic instructional designers, hardware and software support, web authoring, computer lab support, materials support, videography, classroom support, and informatics faculty. Strong technology support and quality academic programs are the hallmark of the FNIC services.

Duties and responsibilities

§ Maintains current knowledge of simulation equipment and software, including hardware, software, and networking required to fully function.

§ Provides recommendations for purchase of equipment, supplies, and materials related to simulation.

§ Operates simulation equipment during planned simulation activities.

§ Independently maintains and troubleshoots simulation equipment, audio/visual equipment, networking, and simulation lab technologies.

§ Independently performs preventive maintenance and upgrades of simulation programs and equipment.

§ Serves as liaison with vendors to install, maintain, and repair equipment.

§ Consults others when appropriate to complete needed repairs or upgrades, or to suggest other vendor solutions.

§ Collaborates in the repair of simulation equipment.

§ Designs data sources to capture, populate and store data need to generate simulation reports.

§ Leads small team in the operational aspects of equipment management.

§ Independently programs mannequins to model physiological responses to instructor specifications.

§ Supports/assists in role-playing applications, props placement, and moulage setup before and after simulations to create a virtual healthcare setting.

§ Trains faculty in the use of simulation equipment, paying particular attention to the cues faculty need to know to determine equipment malfunction.

§ Collaborates and serves as a resource for faculty in the use of simulation.

§ Attends meetings or continuing education to maintain currency with simulation technology and use.

§ Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Relationships :

This position will have supervisory responsibility with student workers (with strong technology skills) and one Simulation Lab Nurse who has technology interest; the position reports administratively and functionally to the Director of the Simulation Lab.

Profile of an Ideal Candidate

§ A Bachelor’s degree in information technology and/or health sciences from an accredited institution of higher education is strongly preferred .

§ At least two years of IT experience is necessary .

§ At least one year of lab experience with mannequins, task trainers, and simulation A/V Software is preferred .

§ Experience with simulation software such as B-Line Medical or Laerdal or Gaumard high-fidelity mannequins is preferred .

§ Understanding patient care simulation technologies and applications is necessary .

§ Basic knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology is necessary .

§ Knowledge of the features and capabilities of basic multimedia equipment is necessary .

§ Advanced knowledge of computer operation and networking is necessary .

§ Knowledge of the basics of high fidelity mannequin functions is necessary .

§ Proven ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.

§ Excellent organizational skills and the ability to think logically and follow directions is necessary .

§ Creativity and flexibility in designing innovative approaches to problem solving is necessary .

§ Demonstrated excellent verbal, written and electronic communication skills is necessary .

§ Ability to excel both independently and as a team member in a fast - paced environment is necessary.
