Vanderbilt University Research Operations Manager - Part-Time, Term in Nashville, Tennessee

Please note: This is a part-time, term position

We are looking for a part-time, term lab manager for the Vanderbilt Stress and Early Adversity (SEA) Lab, a highly collaborative research group exploring the early caregiving environment, neural correlates of early experience, and interventions to improve child and family functioning.

Under the supervision of Dr. Kathryn Humphreys, the individual in this position will have primary responsibility for lab management. Lab management responsibilities include management of hiring and onboarding staff and research assistants, maintenance of lab space and equipment, financial and budget oversight across projects, project reporting support, and development and curation of laboratory manuals, documents, and processes. This position requires being in person at our offices at Vanderbilt 4-5 days per week (e.g., from 9am-1pm). While interest in science is desirable, no experience in scientific research is required.

NOTE: A Term position is a staff position that exists for a period longer than six months but is not expected to last beyond one year. Although a position may exist for a specified or indefinite period, staff who accept term positions are not guaranteed employment for the entire period; they are employed for indefinite periods within the limit of the appointment. There are no guarantees of continued employment, either within the term or when the term ends.

Duties and Responsibilities

Lab management:

  • Provide financial oversight of lab expenditures, maintain individual study budgets, project expenditures, and allocate staff time across budgets

  • Provide day-to-day laboratory oversight, including maintaining laboratory space, infrastructure, and equipment

  • Develop and maintain repository of lab-wide processes and documents

  • Be responsible for human resources functions of the lab, including recruitment of new staff, and recruitment, onboarding, and supervision of research assistants

  • Assist with lab meeting scheduling and upkeep of lab website

  • Order and maintain equipment and supplies

  • Assist with study reporting activities, as needed, including project reporting, recruitment updates, and institutional review board submissions

  • Prepare correspondence, documents, presentations, and reports to support the lab and the lab director

  • Perform general administrative duties to maintain the workings of the laboratory

Supervisory Relationships

This position does have supervisory responsibility of paid research assistants; this position reports administratively and functionally to Dr. Humphreys.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree is required.

  • Proficiency working with Microsoft office suite (Powerpoint, Word, Excel) or similar programs with high level of comfort and knowledge of spreadsheet programs

  • Must be extremely organized, detail oriented and able to function well independently

  • Must be able to work in a fast paced environment

  • Project management experience

  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance

  • Experience with developing and curating study documents (e.g., manuals, procedures) preferred

  • Previous oversight of study budget or finances preferred

  • Expected to have a strong work ethic, high integrity, and good interpersonal skills
