Job Summary:

The Lead Data Center Operations Specialist is the main point of contact on their scheduled shift within our 24x7 IT Operations Center. The Lead Specialist is responsible for training team members, ensuring work is completed efficiently and effectively, and coordinating/executing all MAC's (Moves/Adds/Changes) within the Data Center. The lead specialist works in a standard ticketing system, providing clear, timely, and appropriate communications.  

This position will be responsible for the day-to-day operational needs of data center facilities in a 24 X 7 operating environment. He/she will maintain the proper operating conditions for all IT processing and network equipment to ensure 100% uptime for all systems. The lead specialist is responsible for maintaining data integrity of all assets in the Data Center. 

The Lead Data Center Operations Specialist performs these activities under the direction of the Operations Supervisors and/or Operations Manager. The Lead Specialist advises, trains, and coaches their peers to maintain operational effectiveness & readiness.  

(Note: this role is a day shift role, with hours from 7am to 7pm)

Responsibilities * *

  • Execute & coordinate MACs (Moves/Adds/Changes) for data center devices, infrastructure, and cabling while following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Program Policies, Safety Policies, and Security Policies. 

  • Prioritize workloads, communicate roadblocks, and collaborate in alignment with VUMC and the Data Center's mission. 

  • Lead your scheduled shift and collaborate with other leads to ensure daily operations remain aligned with organizational needs/priorities. 

  • Ensure customer needs are met and identify issues and areas for improvement. 

  • On-Call, Vacation, and Sick Coverage as needed. 

  • Coach and mentor team members on continuous improvements, processes, job functions and resolution skills. 

  • Responsible for overall site readiness and cleanliness. 

  • Create, manage, and maintain thorough documentation of IT assets, chain of custody, and shipments. 

  • Track, audit, and update data center & IT assets within Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) software.  

  • Monitor all data center critical facility systems: fire suppression, water infiltration, air cooling, and power.  

  • Collaborate with internal and external parties to assist in critical facility system incident response. 

  • Facilitate communications & notifications during major incidents (critical application outages). 

  • Other duties as assigned  

Required Skills :  

•        Physically assist in moving and racking equipment  

•        Able to safely lift and move a minimum of fifty (50) pounds  

•        Excellent verbal and written communication skills  

•        Ability to update asset management data as required 

•        On-Call, Vacation, and Sick Coverage as needed. 

•        Effectively utilize the ticket management system to communicate, collaborate, and execute work & projects. 

•        Able to Install/Uninstall/Maintain data center devices (servers, switches, storage and other hardware)  

•        Able to cable systems (power/copper/fiber/other) correctly based on ticket requirements and SOP standards  

•        Communicates effectively and professionally in tickets, emails, telephone conversations, and in-person interactions with customers, management, and peers  

•        Must work effectively with other staff and customers  

•        Must be able to multi-task  

•        Must be able to adapt to changing priorities, conditions, and circumstances  

•        Must be punctual and reliable  

•        Must have good organization skills  

•        Must have good interpersonal skills for working in a team environment  

•        Must have good time management skills  

•        May be required to operate material handling equipment – server lifts. 

•        Proficiency working with standard desktop PC tools and applications such as MS Office, MS Outlook, web browsers, etc.  

•        Server/Network Hardware Rack and Stack experience 

•        Experience working with ticketing systems.  

•        Working knowledge of computer hardware 

•        Working knowledge of networking components and infrastructures 

•        Knowledgeable in Data Center best practices 

•        Strong cable management skills and experience running fiber and copper in a data center 

•        Certifications in Data Center technologies are desired 

TECHNICAL CAPABILITIES :

• Data Replication (Novice): Possesses sufficient proficiency to define data replication requirements. Has basic knowledge of data replication software, such as Sybase replication server and Data Propagator. Generally works under the direction of others while accomplishing assignments.

• Data Planning (Novice): Possesses sufficient fundamental proficiency to successfully demonstrate the skill in practical applications of moderate difficulty. Generally works under the direction of others while accomplishing assignments. Has retained equivalent knowledge from past experience. May have successfully completed in-depth training in core components of the skill.

• Computer Equipment Operations (Novice): Demonstrates the ability to operate the equipment using all basic functions. Is trained, certified and/or licensed in equipment usage. Adheres to equipment safety and environmental compliance standards and practices. Performs preventative and minor maintenance functions. Conducts pre-operational inspections and completion of equipment log books. Documents any equipment malfunctions or unsafe conditions.

• Data Warehouse Access and Reporting (Novice): Possesses sufficient fundamental proficiency to successfully access information and prepare reports of moderate difficulty. Has demonstrated knowledge of basic databases and other sources of information to design and present reports.
