Job Summary:

Basic scientists focus on high-level scientific research and development, investigative experiments, data analysis, and formal data presentation. This position may include the expectation of necessary skills to manage the day-to-day operations of the laboratory and its personnel.

Research Summary:

We are a cancer biology lab that focuses on kidney cancer and extracellular matrix biology. Our work includes the spectrum of cancer research, from biomarker development and clinical trials in patients to mouse models of cancer, mammalian cell culture, cell biology, advanced microscopy, and genomics. This position requires extensive laboratory experience, including wet lab techniques such as mammalian cell culture, cell transfection and transduction, western blotting, PCR, microscopy, immunohistochemistry and tissue-based immunofluorescence, and flow cytometry. In addition, the position includes working with mouse models of cancer. Our lab is highly collaborative; we value teamwork, learning from each other, and having fun! The ideal candidate would have experience and enthusiasm for training junior investigators such as new graduate and undergraduate students.

Department Summary:

The Division of Hematology and Oncology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center conducts research and treats all types of adult cancers including solid tumor cancers and hematological (blood) disorders, as benign hematologic disorders such as coagulation disorders and non-cancerous blood diseases.

With over 80 faculty members representing a broad range of professional expertise, our dedicated team of professionals is committed to hematologic and oncologic care through:

• Research to better understand and treat cancers and benign hematologic

diseases

• Translating VICC laboratory research into therapies to help people with cancer

• State-of-the-art patient care and personalized cancer therapy

• Clinical trials, including Phase I drug development with subsequent Phase II

and Phase III testing

• Training future hematology and oncology doctors and researchers

• Cancer chemotherapy, pharmacology, and biological therapy with an

emphasis on solid tumors

• Treating bleeding and coagulation disorders, anemia and other disorders of

blood

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Perform laboratory experiments and produce competent and reproducible results to a high technical standard

• Devise research methods, prepare technical specifications, and specify laboratory test equipment and processes

• Analyze data, and interpret and present results with minimal faculty supervision

• Design experiments and implement and standardize new processes and procedures based on expert knowledge of literature and subject matter

• Maintain detailed documentation and write formal scientific reports suitable for publication

• Prepare and/or maintain samples and specimens

• Manage laboratory personnel

• Maintain and operate standard laboratory equipment, including centrifuges, pipetting machines, spectrometers, ELISA readers, as well as specialized equipment necessary to support the laboratory

• Perform mathematical calculations and generate relevant statistics to support scientific output

• Prepare materials suitable for institutional review of formal protocols and operating procedures with minimal faculty supervision
