Position Information

Job Title Student Assistant (Work Study) AXE Makerspace

General Description

This is a work-study student position responsible for assisting in the operations and activities of the AXE Makerspace.

Job Duties

  1. Provides assistance in answering phone calls, taking messages, greeting patrons, and assisting patrons.

  2. Answers patron questions via phone, email, online and face-to-face.

  3. Articulates and explains makerspace policies and procedures to a diverse campus community.

  4. Operates and maintains makerspace equipment including 3D printers, laser cutters, sewing machines, soldering stations, etc.

  5. Provides individual and small group training on equipment usage to students, faculty, and staff.

  6. Performs basic troubleshooting of equipment.

  7. Assists with equipment check-in and check-out.

  8. Assists in maintaining makerspace inventory.

  9. Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  10. Knowledge of general office and clerical procedures and concepts.

  11. Ability to communicate professionally and courteously with university faculty and staff, students, and the general public.

  12. Ability to understand and follow instructions.

  13. Ability to accurately prepare and maintain records and files.

    Required Qualifications

The minimum education required for admittance as a student at Stephen F. Austin State University.

No direct experience is required. Training and instruction will be provided.

A student must be awarded and accept a “Work-Study Permit” for each semester the student will be working.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Technical experience with 3D printers, laser cutters, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and/or sewing machines is preferred.

  2. Experience with face-to-face customer service is preferred.

    Physical Demands

    Special Conditions for Eligibility

A student must be enrolled in six or more semester hours to be eligible for student employment during the fall or spring semesters. To be eligible for student employment during the summer, a student must be enrolled in three or more semester hours or be registered for courses in the upcoming fall semester.

Student assistants may not hold any other type of position such as a graduate assistantship or temporary casual employment at the same time that they are employed as a student assistant.
