Town of Mount Vernon JAILER / DISPATCHER *(This is an On-the-Job Training position. Must meet OJT eligibility guidelines) *Job# 3388370 *Job Description: *(KIND OF WORK) This is security and communications work in the performance of various functions applicable to the operations of a municipal jail and communications facility. *Pay Rate: *[$11.77 to *[$13.00 Work Schedule: Requires availability to work days, evenings, nights, and rotating shifts. *Job Duties: *(The scope of work that may be performed but not a complete list of tasks or duties of positions of this class.) Prepares arrest records identifying prisoners, charges assigned and other pertinent data; records the entry and release of prisoners; insures the safekeeping of all personal affects removed and the accounting of monies or valuables received from prisoners; assists in feeding and providing medical attention to prisoners; arranges bail; receives and records all fines, traffic tickets, cash bonds and other payments to the Police Department; maintains security over the jail facility; answers telephone calls, dispatches police cars and fire trucks and maintains communications with them; provides officers with information as requested; enters and retrieves information through state and national databases; maintains daily radio logs; maintains police and fire responder logs; maintains gas, oil, and mileage log; monitors supply inventory; sends faxes and makes copies; attends courts as required; provides information and handles complaints, both in person and by telephone: prepares and submits reports as required; performs related work as required. *ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE WORK: Some knowledge of basic clerical bookkeeping or record keeping; some knowledge of detention fundamentals and procedures; some knowledge of communications dispatching or the ability to readily acquire this knowledge; ability to work effectively in stressful, emergency or highly emotional situations; ability to speak clearly, using proper terminology; ability to deal firmly and tactfully with prisoners and the general public; ability to prepare and maintain operational and monetary records; ability to type sufficiently to complete forms and reports; ability to maintain effective working relationships with superiors, other employees and the general public. *DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK: An employee in this class is responsible for the receiving, booking, safekeeping and releasing of prisoners confined in the jail and dispatching for the Police and Fire departments. Work is performed in accordance with established policies and procedures on an assigned shift under potentially stressful conditions. General supervision is received from the Jailer/Dispatcher Supervisor or other superior officer and no supervision is exercised over other employees. *MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from a standard senior high school, or successful completion of the General Educational Development (GED). Prefers experience supplemented by coursework in typing, bookkeeping or record keeping and preferably some experience working under stressful or dangerous conditions, or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements. Requires a current and valid driver's license from state of residence. Requires a background check and drug screen.
