Job Summary

The Dominion Generation business unit seeks a highly motivated individual to serve as an Instrumentation & Controls Technician I/II at Mt. Storm Power Station, the largest fossil power station in Dominion's fleet!

The Instrument Technician I/II will support providing reliable, efficient, and economical electric service to our customers in a responsible manner.

The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting in maintaining the critical instrumentation in the power plant. The individual will also be responsible for Instrumentation & Controls work order completions and work method procedures and standards for the equipment instrumentation. The Instrument Technician I/II must be willing to work in an industrial environment, with the bulk of their time spent assisting with field work including the inspection, testing, service, repair, configuration, calibration, and installation of recording and automatic control instruments. These instruments include flow meters, pressure gauges, thermocouples, smart control valve positions, vibration detectors, transmitters, regulators, and related components in power station systems. The successful candidate will be focused on Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS) calibrations and inspections to ensure that all operations activities are conducted within company, local, state, and federal environmental policies, regulations, and procedures. This includes regularly working from an elevated stack platform during various weather conditions.

The candidate must have the ability to communicate clearly and to assist with daily technical assistance to Operations and Maintenance departments regarding power plant equipment and operation. The candidate will be required to assist Technicians to review control room Human Machine Interface (HMI) screens for abnormalities, along with Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and Plant Information (PI)/Data Historian to identify any irregularity and make recommendations for resolving them.

Job Summary

The Instrument Technician I/II will:

  • Be focused on maintaining, testing, and repairing station’s CEMS equipment, ensuring environmental compliance.

  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections, troubleshooting, using portable pressure and temperature test equipment, HART, fluke meter and other similar test equipment for instrument calibrations;

  • Test flue gas, read meters, and record data as required;

  • Assist in the performance of required engineering functions for control loop modifications and calibration and parameters;

  • Assist project leaders with control system upgrades and/or modifications.

  • Current schedule is an alternating M-Th, Tu-Fr 10 HR schedule, however subject to change depending on station needs/requirements.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

The knowledge, skills, abilities and experience required for entry into this job include the following:

  • Instrument Technician I : Associate's Degree in Electronics or related technology, with 0-2 years of related experience OR High School Diploma or GED with at least 2 years of related experience.

  • Instrument Technician II : Associate's Degree in Electronics or related technology, with at least 3 years of related experience OR High School Diploma or GED with at least 5 years of related experience.

Other required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience:

  • Full abilities to perform preventive maintenance activities, reading meters and recording data as required.

  • Ability to understand and apply skills in the use of portable pressure, flow, temperature, and other similar test equipment.

  • Detail-oriented.

  • Safety-oriented.

  • Focused on Regulatory Compliance.

  • Effective problem identification and problem resolution skills.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to use Microsoft Office to include Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, SAP experience a plus.

  • Ability to troubleshoot various complex components.

  • Ability to work effectively on one's own or in a team environment.

  • Ability to maintain drawings and configuration documentation as related to instrumentation.

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. of equipment and/or materials.

  • Must have the physical ability to carry a minimum of 50 pounds tooling, test equipment, and plant equipment.

  • Must be able to work from an elevated stack platform in various weather conditions. Other work conditions include noise, dirt, heat, cold, tight space, and elevated areas requiring fall protection.

  • Experience with PLCs, VFDs (variable frequency drive), and remote monitoring systems commonly used in offshore wind farms is preferred.

Degree or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education: Associate
