What will you do?

The main role of the Estimator is to create accurate and timely cost estimates and proposals for the sales team. This involves tasks such as project take-offs, interpreting specifications, creating scope of work, analyzing risks, ensuring compliance with building codes, and suggesting value engineering ideas. The product is a cost estimate and proposal. By handling these responsibilities, the Estimator enables the Sales Executive to enhance customer prospecting, increase customer engagement, and concentrate on bidding strategy.

Responsibilities include:

  • Performing system(s) take-off: Quantifying equipment and device counts based on bid documents.

  • Interpreting the sequence of operations to determine point count, materials, and required control devices.

  • Interpreting specifications to identify labor requirements and code-related obligations.

  • Developing a Bill of Material (BOM) and Scope of Work (SOW).

  • Offering alternate designs as per building code requirements, value engineering solutions, and selecting fire alarm equipment.

  • Developing a subcontractor technical bid package and coordinating with the Sales Executive.

  • Obtaining quotes from external vendors for additional products and services.

  • Creating the final customer proposal.

  • Communicating and collaborating with a geographically dispersed sales and operations team across different time zones.

  • Learning and utilizing company design, bid, and quote tools.

  • Assisting the sales team in addressing technical and pricing queries.

  • Maintaining comprehensive documentation of all work performed for generating the estimate and assisting in the turnover process when the estimate/proposal turns into an order.

  • Participating in Cost Review and Technical Handover meetings with the operations team, sales and management when needed.

  • Visit job sites and meet customers to validate and optimize estimates and designs.

  • Collaborate with various internal/external departments such as operations, service, procurement, finance, legal, admins and other inside/outside resources (sub-contractor, suppliers) as needed to obtain and complete tasks.

  • Participate in sales meetings, professional association seminars, workshops and trainings.

What will you need to succeed?

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or other related field, College diploma in the electrical engineering or other technical fields related to fire alarm systems. Candidates with a combination of education and directly related experience will also be considered; A High School Diploma (or GED Equivalency) is a minimum requirement.

  • Preferably 3 to 5 years of industry sales or estimating experience in Fire and Life Safety systems with knowledge of Fire Alarm Supervisory Systems, Fire and Smoke Detection, Audible/Visual Notification, and Mass Notification.

  • Proven track record to comprehend, explain, and estimate labor and materials associated with the type of electrical infrastructure required for fire alarm systems. This understanding could come from working other related roles in the controls industry, fire alarm industry, or even from performing other estimator roles from other segments of the electrical or mechanical industry.

  • Experience using an estimating/quoting system is preferred.

  • Proficient in reading and interpreting building plans and specifications.

  • In depth knowledge of fire alarm system components, building codes, standards, and regulations (e.g., NFPA, CAN/ULC).

  • Knowledge of fire suppression and sprinkler systems an asset.

  • Strong time management and leadership skills and self-motivation.

  • Bilingual, with strong English and French communication skills, both written and verbal to interact with colleague and customer locally and across Canada

  • Strong computer and Microsoft 365 proficiency.

  • Available to travel to job site as required.

  • Ability to adapt to shifting demands and completing priorities from customers and internal partners to consistently manage time effectively and meet established deadlines.

  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, ability work across cultures effectively, valuing diversity within a virtual team.
