National Institutes of Health Computer Scientist in Montgomery County, Maryland

Summary This position is in the Division of Intramural Research Programs (IRP) at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). The IRP plans and conducts basic, clinical, and translational research to advance understanding of the diagnosis, causes, treatment, and prevention of psychiatric disorders. Responsibilities Design and develop scientific software applications and/or hardware. Participate in establishing system design characteristics to meet the requirements. Apply the techniques of parallel computing to computationally intensive tasks that are encountered in biomedical applications. Prepare software documentation and technical reports related to assigned projects. Serve as a technical consultant for the NIH scientists in the area of scientific computing and associated automation technology. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications In order to qualify for a Computer Scientist, GS-1550 position, you must have: A. successfully completed a full-four-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree in Computer Science; OR B. successfully completed a full- four-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours included a combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus. In addition, in order to qualify for a Computer Scientist, GS-1550 position at the GS-12 level, you must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: designing and modifying software applications to help solve scientific computing problems; designing and conducting tests of software function and performance in the areas of graphics, modeling and simulation, and distributed file systems; writing technical reports and recommending changes or improvements to enhance system performance; and serving as a technical consultant for scientists in the area of scientific computing and associated automation technology. Additional Information This position is designated as a "non-emergency/teleworker" position and the selected candidate will be considered a "non-emergency/teleworker" employee.
