CITY OF MONTE VISTA Code Enforcement Officer in MONTE VISTA, Colorado

JOB TITLE: Code Enforcement Officer

MUSTS: Must be at least 21 years of age and a U.S. Citizen at the time of application. Must have a valid, unrestricted driver s license at the time of application and a valid, unrestricted Colorado driver s license by date of hire. This position will also be subject to annual MVR searches. Must have a Highschool diploma or General Education Degree (GED) equivalent. Must also be able to pass all testing and screening requirements established at the time of application, including background check and drug testing. Must also have ASP and Taser training, and two years of similar experience with demonstrated ability work with and handle animals.

SKILLS: Animal Control certification, if not held, obtained within one year of hire. Ability to learn and then demonstrate knowledge of department s policy and procedures, City personnel policies, municipal code and state and federal law as applicable to this position. Knowledge and ability to maintain public order within the community. Knowledge and ability to maintain public order within the community. Aptitude for strong interpersonal and organizational skills and tact; the ability to handle stressful situations, and work well under pressure; interact with all types of individuals; resolve problems and manage conflict; identify threatening situations and de-escalate aggressive behavior. Ability to operate motor vehicles safely under various conditions and circumstances. Operate a motor vehicle safely while being observant for traffic law violations, suspicious persons or events or other hazards. Operate a motor vehicle safely in severe weather, including rain, wind and snow storms. Operate an emergency vehicle with red lights and siren safely with due regard for the safety of other drivers. Skill and ability to learn and use required computer software applications. Ability to communicate with the general public on topics related to code compliance and enforcement. Comprehension in utilizing problem-solving strategies and ability to mediate resolutions to problems. Proficiently able to write effective and comprehensive reports. Capacity to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, outside organizations and the general public. Applies knowledge and reasoning to make prompt and effective decisions quickly in both routine and non-routine situations. Recognizes conditions or circumstances that indicate something unusual or out of the ordinary, while using senses of sight and hearing to assist in recognition.

DUTIES: This position will assist in providing the safety and protection of residents by identifying, investigating and enforcing the Code Ordinances of the City of Monte Vista. Also performs responsible work in support of the Community Development Director and Public Works Department. The Code Enforcement Officer is a non-sworn employee of the City of Monte Vista and the Monte Vista Police Department and is designated as a civilian position. Other related duties include: Serves as a good-will ambassador for Public Safety by providing friendly, helpful and informative customer service to the general public.

Maintain public relations with residential and business communities.

Involvement and participation in community outreach, police community relation programs (Neighborhood Watch, National Night Out, etc.)

Patrol the corporate limits of the City to identify and investigate violations of municipal ordinances including vehicle owner(s), property owner(s), businesses and residents.

Educates vehicle owner(s), property owner(s), businesses and residents of ordinance violations, issue written notices of violations; issue written summons and complaints to offenders as required.

Responsible for animal control. Issues warning notices of violations and impounds stray, vicious or injured animals.

Responsible for removal of animals from inhumane con itions and transport animals to shelter for treatment or care.

Appears in municipal courts to offer testimony relative to the investigation and charging of individuals with non-criminal offenses.

Responds to and/or provide assistance to full-time public safety officers, on calls for service. Calls for service include parking enforcement, lock-outs, animal complaints, motorist assists, lost persons or article reports, private property accident reports, lift assists, minor first aid under the direction of 911/EMS medical direction, non-criminal calls for service and reports to assist a sworn officer.

Prepares a variety of routine and non-routine reports and records necessary information for the reporting of specific non-criminal incidents.

WAGES: $19.30 to $26.07/hour, depending on experience.

DURATION: This is a permanent, full time position.

SHIFT: Monday through Friday from 8AM-5PM. 40 hours per week, depending on demand. Schedule to be discussed further with the Chief of Police.

JOB SITE: Monte Vista, Colorado, Rio Grande County.
