We are currently hiring a Principal Engineer in the R&D department of ATI’s Specialty Materials business unit. This position will be based in Monroe, NC. As the Principal Engineer within ATI’s Specialty Materials business unit you will be responsible inventing, developing, and improving specialty alloy products for ATI for use in aerospace engine, airframe, oil and gas, and biomedical markets.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research to support development and improvement of titanium, nickel-base superalloy, specialty steel, powder metal, and additive manufacturing products.

  • Utilize process simulation to support manufacturing process improvements that result in better product quality and lower manufacturing costs.

  • Conduct testing and characterization in order to provide expert, timely materials solutions to customers. Provide technical marketing support to the Business Development organization through customer visits and targeted technical support.

  • Communicate results to management, colleagues, and customers in the form of written reports and oral presentations.

  • Collaborate with technology and research colleagues to propose and defend project concepts for new products, cost savings, quality improvement, and process innovation.

  • Maintain industry expertise and current knowledge of developments in Ti, Ni-base superalloy, or specialty steel metallurgy and additive manufacturing by experimentation, attending meetings and conferences conducted by trade associations, by reviewing trade literature and by periodic visits to customer or supplier base.

  • Analyze microstructure of aerospace metals using SEM, EBSD, TEM, optical microscopy, and/or diffraction methods.

Minimum REQUIREMENTS:

  • MS in materials science engineering with +10 years of experience in field of specialty materials or metal alloys or closely related discipline or PhD in materials science engineering and +8 years work experience in the field of specialty materials.

  • Minimum 10 years experience in materials and processes, design, manufacturing, or research and development in specialty alloys, powder metals, or additive manufacturing.

  • Must be comfortable meeting with customers, presenting at technical meetings, and be willing to travel 6 -- 12 times per year.

  • Must be enthusiastic and excited about tackling challenges and comfortable with ambiguity and change that accompanies working in a research environment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 2 - 5 years industry or university experience in design, manufacturing, or research and development of specialty alloys, powder metals, or additive manufacturing.

  • Experience in researching, developing, specifying, or utilizing specialty alloys and powder metals such as titanium, nickel-base superalloys, specialty steels, or other aerospace metals.

  • Experience using thermodynamic calculation software such as ThermoCalc, JMat Pro, Pandat, etc. and or experience using finite element codes such as DEFORM , FORGE, or ABAQUS.
