ProMedica Health System Nursing Supervisor - Nursing Staff Support - Part Time - Nights in Monroe, Michigan

Coordinates the overall activities of patient care areas and hospital departments on the assigned shift. Provides resource assistance and guidance to nursing personal regarding patient care, established policies, procedures, and standards. Ascertains the need for and adjusts the job assignments for nursing personnel ensuring that each assigned area has the resources necessary to maintain a safe patient care environment. The supervisor contacts the administrator on call for direction with critical problems or concerns.

ACCOUNTABILITIES All duties listed below are essential unless noted otherwise 1. Evaluates, recommends, and participates in the development of policies and procedures relating to nursing service operations, patient care and interdepartmental coordination. Interprets, implements, and enforces hospital policies, procedures, and practices. Ensures compliance with governmental, JCAHO and Hospital requirements and standards.

  1. Responsible for ensuring the proper communication, coordination, and quality of nursing care during assigned shift. Responsible for functioning of other hospital departments in the absence of department supervisor. Communicates significant occurrences to administration. Maintains communications with all patient care areas through regular staff reports, meetings, and daily rounds.

  2. Receives and prioritizes requests for bed assignments for patients. Assigns bed on appropriate nursing unit. Takes orders for all direct admissions and places these patients on the appropriate nursing units.

  3. Observes, evaluates, and guides nursing personnel to ensure effective nursing care. Ensures that patient care areas are staffed based on best practice productivity models, patient acuity and education, training, and competency of staff; may transfer or reassign employees as needed. Keeps abreast of current developments in patient care delivery and nursing practice.

  4. Acts as a liaison between the medical staff, other hospital departments, and the nursing service, as necessary. Acts as a hospital representative handling outside communications with patient families, outside services, the media, others, and contacts appropriate administration when necessary.

  5. Assists with coordination of organ and tissue donation process. Follows hospital policy/procedures associated with all cardiopulmonary and imminent deaths.

  6. Actively rounds on new admissions every 24 hours and completes appropriate rounding log. Implements service recovery as needed during rounding and when requested.

  7. Performs other duties as assigned. Education: Graduation from an accredited nursing program. Must have bachelor’s degree or obtain degree within 5 years from date of hire.

Skills: The administrative and management skills necessary to coordinate and control the nursing services during the assigned shift and to administer hospital policies and procedures. Strong clinical and interpersonal skills to provide guidance and direction to subordinate nursing personnel regarding complex nursing treatments, development of nursing care plans and so forth; ability to interact with patients of all ages and patients’ families.

Years of Experience: 3-5 years of progressively more responsible nursing experience.

License: Current license to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Michigan.

Certification: ACLS and NIMS certification or completion is expected within 6 months from date of hire.

WORKING CONDITIONS Physical Demands: As an essential job function, due to continuously changing patient census/activity and staffing needs, must have the flexibility to work a varying schedule should the need arise, which may require working a varying shift, overtime (greater than 40 worked hours per week) and/or shift durations that exceed the assigned status for shift length and/or hours per week. Duties require handling trauma and crises situations throughout the hospital. Must have physical ability to stand and/or walk for extended periods and to lift, position, and transfer patients. Must have interpersonal skills required to communicate effectively with patients of the following ages: neonate (birth to 1 month), pediatric (1-12 years), adolescent (13-17 years), adult (18-64 years), and geriatric (64 years and above); physicians, and other hospital personnel as needed to promote quality patient care.
