The UnitedHealth Group Environmental Sustainability Lead will report to the VP Sustainability/ ESG. The ESG team has strategic responsibility for UnitedHealth Group’s ESG activities and partners across the enterprise to create and implement strategies for a sustainable health system. As a member of the team, the Environmental Sustainability Lead will be responsible for developing, advancing and refining UnitedHealth Group’s environmental strategies and programs, as well as coordinating the execution of these initiatives across the organization to minimize our impact on the environment.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop, advance, and coordinate execution of the overall environmental strategy for a multi-dimensional approach to minimize our impact (e.g. carbon emissions, water, waste)

  • Refine milestones and measurements towards attaining environmental goals through a multi-year plan involving authentic actions, internal and external partnerships, and rigorous oversight and governance

  • Assess and analyze current programs, policies, and practices to identify areas for performance improvement and progress in achieving our environmental commitments, including science-based targets

  • Identify, assess, and validate potential new initiatives and investments to help achieve environmental commitments (e.g. energy transition) in conjunction with Finance

  • Support the enterprise health equity agenda by engaging with internal and external partners to understand the environmental determinants of health

  • Create and implement organizational programs that address environmental goals, with attention to factors such as cost effectiveness, feasibility, ease of organizational integration

  • Develop and maintain relationships across the organization with key subject matter experts and internal stakeholders including real estate, ESG CoE, sourcing and procurement, finance, enterprise health and safety, enterprise resiliency and response, and business leaders

  • Develop and support mechanisms for employee engagement and change management with respect to environmental efforts

  • Serve as the lead internal subject matter expert on evolving environmental legislation, regulation, trends, innovation, research and science

  • Partner with other internal stakeholders to assess the actual and potential impacts of climate-related risks and opportunities on the organization

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years in environmental sustainability field

  • 2+ years working in a consulting capacity or an in-house strategy and execution role related to developing and advancing corporate science-based targets to reduce carbon emissions

  • Track record of effectively managing programs in a highly matrixed organization

  • Demonstrated track-record of strategic thinking and ability to influence and drive strategy and investment decisions across multiple stakeholders at all levels of the organization

  • Ability to align objectives between Sustainability/ ESG and business goals and data-driven strategies and track performance against goals, including scorecards

  • Solid communication, and presentation, skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Public Health, Communications, Banking, Insurance or related field or related experience

  • Experience evaluating solutions to enable an energy transition strategy

  • Proven effectiveness at building solid relationships and collaborations across businesses and functions

  • People Management experience

California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Washington, or Washington, D.C. Residents Only: The salary range for this role is $122,100 to $234,700 annually. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with al minimum wage laws as applicable. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
